SSc8 lighting along rail tracks

CS-2009 SSc8: Light Pollution Reduction
posted by Kristopher Lashley on Aug 18, 2015, 11:06 am

We are working on a project where the back of the building is very close to the property line that abuts a railway track. This railway track is used only for freight and not for any passenger trains. Does anyone know of any allowances that would allow for extra distance of the lighting boundary? The building is LZ3 classified and on the other side of the railway track is a scarp yard. Any help would be great. Thanks! SSc8 ...

Hello from Colombia, We have a C&S Project that has two different buildings (Hotel and offices building) in the same boundary. They share only three underground level parking garages and a pedestrian hardscape at the 1st level. Can they be LEED certie...

Utility Trenches OK Beyond Boundary?

Are utility trenches such as sanitary service lines required to be within the Project Boundary? We're working on a school addition and a new sanitary line will be installed from the addition to the existing holding tank. The route stretches out a fair distance, do we need to extend a finger of the Property Boundary out as well? MPR3 ...

Exclude Existing Lights From Calculation?

A new building, for which LEED certification is sought, will be constructed on an elementary school campus that has multiple existing buildings. The LEED boundary is at the property line and includes all buildings on campus. Is it acceptable to include all new sight lighting but exclude all existing site lighting from the trespass calculations? SSc8 ...

SSc8 Local Ordinance Requirements

Schools-2009 SSc8: Light Pollution Reduction

We are looking into the potential of achieving LEED certification at a new School project. The school's property line is directly adjacent to a sidewalk/curb. The local city ordinances require that all pedestrian areas (i.e. the side walk) are lit to 1.5 footcandles. This value exceeds the SSc8 requirements for all zones (ours happens to be a LZ4). Are there any rulings that would allow for an exception to this requirement where public safety is concerned and a local ordinance requires lighting greater than LEED? Thanks so much in advance for any help. SSc8 ...

We're really proud of this video we (at BuildingGreen) created for the U.S. Department of Energy with Storyshop Films. It's less than 10 minutes, and tells the story of this great elementary school using many different voices: teachers, parent, ...

Is there a minimum period required for joint-use

Schools-2009 SSc10: Joint Use of Facilities
posted by Ward Miller on Mar 14, 2018, 6:15 am

The school is not in session for 16 weeks of the year and the entire campus and all facilities are with little to no use. Only several security, cleaning staff and administrators are present during this time, but the vast majority of the campus is closed. This will be the case in the current Performing Arts Center that is being added to the campus as well. As such, we are wondering whether allowing joint-use (in line with credit option 1) during the remaining 36 weeks of the year would be sufficient for meeting the intent and requirements of this credit? Hopefully someone has received a related GBCI...

PIf2 Site Characteristics for individual building project on a LEED Campus

Schools-2009 PIf2: Project Summary Details

I have a project that is getting built in two phases on a LEED Campus. The first phase includes the construction of a new 3-8 grade building. Phase 2 will consist of demo of two smaller buildings with the replacement of a new larger building for K-2 grades and a library. The project boundary as it is set right now includes an existing administrative building, a new cafeteria addition, and a parking lot servicing all the buildings including a gym (set outside of the LEED Campus boundary). There is also an access road that connects the parking lot and street on the south side of the project with a street...

Supermarket in a spead shopping center.

lots, and uses and nothing else than the supermarket is being certified LEED. The leaser is constructing a new supermarket and the old building that was in that place was turned down, so just the store is being reconstructed, no roads, exterior lights, pavement, parking lots, just the supermarket. The supermarket has control of the land where the supermarket will be, but not the roads, or the walkways...
