Regularly Occupied Area vs. Unconditioned Area

Regularly Occupied Area vs. Unconditioned Area

July 21, 2011

In filling out the Space Usage Type table on PI f3 I've noticed the form doesn't seem to 'like' when your regulalry occupied area is equal to your unconditioned area. For our particular instance, there is a warehouse portion that is regulalry occupied but is not air conditioned. There are exhaust fans only. In this case the occupied floor area is equal to the amount of unconditioned area, but when both those fields are completed with the same number (slightly less than the gross area) the template does not indicate it's complete.

How does one document that there is occuped but unconditioned space without receiving the red text under the table that reads "Total gross area for each row must be equal to or greater than the regularly occupied and unconditioned areas." preventing template completion?

Correction / update to "approved" PI Form 3

July 20, 2011

While preparing clarifications to pending prerequisites/credits the team found a discrepancy in the "approved" PI Form 3. Can the team make the necessary changes to PI Form 3 to match consistently across all prerequisites/credits, even though this form has been "approved" by the review team?

Diagramming conventions

July 18, 2011

Are there any conventions or standards for maps and diagrams submitted in support of the prerequisites and credits under SLL and NPD? I've been looking for a simple method to portray, for instance, the intersection density of SLL Prerequisite 1, Option 2. An aerial photo of the site seems too visually cluttered, while using Google Maps' satellite or terrain view might be too simplistic. I don't know of any other resource that could offer what I need without a lot of tedious CAD tracing. I also am curious if there are any standard elements, such as property lines and building footprints, that should appear.

Many thanks.

Campus Reasonable Site Boundary

Campus Reasonable Site Boundary

July 13, 2011

I am working on the documentation for a 2009 LEED-NC renovation of a single campus residence hall. I would love some clarification on a few items.

1. In the MPR 3 Language it states "LEED projects located on a campus must have project boundaries such that if all the buildings on campus become LEED certified, then 100% of the gross land area on the campus would be included with in a LEED Boundary. If this requirement is in conflict with MPR #7, then MPR #7 will take precendence."

Does this mean I have to include the whole campus in the property area of the project? Or is it more of a jigsaw puzzle idea, so as the different buildings hypothetically get LEED certified the entire campus property would eventually be included?

2. Since the residence hall is a single campus project, does it need to go through the AGMBC 2010? The application guide states that project teams may use the guidance when pursuing certification of two or more LEED Projects. I only have one project, so I don't qualify, right?

Earning Certs within 5 years

July 11, 2011

I presume that this is a new construction project that is currently in the process of design and will be built with a possible completion date of 5 years hence...or more. Theoretically you will register the building at the begining of the design process and then upload 'design' credits to the GBCI while the design is being finalized. Construction will then begin and upload of those construction credits will take place at the end of construction. Of course that's all 'hopeful'. I would suggest that if you are considering deviating from this that you contact GBCI/USGBC with your proposed timeline so that you can get clear WRITTEN confirmation from USGBC/GBCI as to the timeline that you wish to follow.

NPD Prerequisite 3 - Connected and Open Community

July 11, 2011

Hi all,
Regarding NPD P3, Is it necessary for achieving this prerequisite to include the green open space area into the net area used to calculate the intersections per sp. mi?
(equation 1, Intersections per sq. mi. = total intersections/net area)

Thank you

No tenants at this stage

July 11, 2011

What happens if the developer doesn't have any tenants onboard at the time of certification? Can a draft lease agreement suffice? can anyone direct me to a more detailed version of appendix 4 or summarise it here and how to determince which case you are presenting on the templates - does this ever vary between the credits being pursued.

thanks

LEED for Homes - MR 2.2

July 11, 2011

This is my first time working on a LEED project for a residential construction company and I'm trying to finish up the final paperwork (basically the MR 2.2 section). I am not LEED certified and our LEED consultant has been really busy.

What is the best way to approach this section? I have the LEED for Homes Rating System PDF from USGBC but, no other reference material.

Is it correct that one material must make up 90% of a component in order for it to be eligible for points?

For example, would 90% of all the counters in the Kitchen + Bathrooms in the whole house have to be made from the same material to count OR is it okay if the materials are different OR is it on a room by room basis (like if 90% of the cabinets in the kitchen were LEED compliant, would they be eligible)?

I'm trying to get this section filled out correctly as soon as possible. I have a lot more questions, is this section supposed to be really tedious? or am I doing something wrong? Is there some other reference material that would help me answer these kinds of questions?

Any advice on LEED for Homes and specifically the MR 2.2 section would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

LEED registered projects

Ed, USGBC maintains a database of registered LEED projects. There's no indication which of these wants volunteers, but it's the only resource I know that would provide some clues. Getting involved in your regional USGBC chapter would probably help.

Does Automation promote integrated design?

July 8, 2011

On the page about Pilot Credit 5 John Albrecht proposed that Automation enabled project management tools can help make the design process more integrated. I believe he has in mind design & construction management tools such as LoraxPro, maybe also GreenGrade.  Does anyone have experience that might shed light on that suggestion? What other tools are people using? Here's what John said:
"Re: IDP and Automation, I am no Auto-head but here's my thinking. The LEED Automation products that I have seen feature improved information sharing, transparency, continuity, and, most importantly to IDP, team collaboration. Instead of separate LEED hoops (updating checklists, LEED status report, LEED online credit by credit access and updates, plus extra emails and phone calls) Automation's promise of one-stop shopping has to be appealing --even if not the end-all. How does this align with your impressions?"
