LEED for Schools, or LEED NC ?

June 30, 2011

Hello,

I was wondering if I could get your opinion on which LEED Scheme I should use.
Our client wants to entirely refurbish a school block that is 100 years old. Windows, HVAC systems, flooring and other items will be amended. In addition the client would like to add to the existing block a new part that will constitute approx one third of the total block. The block will serve as classrooms and a learning center for grades 7, 8 and 9.

Which LEED scheme should I use, knowing that 2/3 of the block will be refurbished and 1/3 of the block will be completely new. Is it LEED for schools for the whole building?

Thanks for your help,

MRc2: VOC standard question

June 22, 2011

On the table for Environmentally Preferable Products (Table 1 in the reference guide for MR2), under Roof AND floor AND wall for the insulation component, which version of the California "Practice for Testing of VOC's from Building Materials Using Small Chanbers" should be used? There are at least (2) version out there.

Which should be used? There appears to be a 2004 version and a 2010 version.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

LEED Certifications for Parking Garages No Longer Allowed

News on this has been trickling out for a little while now, but I wanted to put up an official information announcement here on LEEDuser: parking garages are specifically excluded from eligibility for LEED certification, as of a LEED Interpretation issued on May 9, 2011. That means that any parking garages registered before that date are fine to proceed, but anyone trying to register after that date are out of luck.

Parking garages are defined as "buildings that dedicate more than 75% of floor area (including areas not covered, enclosed, or conditioned) to the parking and circulation of motor vehicles."

More useful parking garage info from the LEED MPR Supplemental Guidance:

Parking garages may not be included in the gross floor area of the LEED project building.

Parking garages may be included within the LEED project boundary—if parking is within, connected to, or on the site of the LEED project building.

Does this news affect your project? What do you think of it?

PI f3: Full-Time Equivalence and Total Daily Occupancy

June 14, 2011

I'm working on a core and shell certification proyect, especifically filling out the PI form -3, i don't know which option i need to select in order to achieve this prerequisite because, first of all, in this case we know the occupancy counts, and if we select the option "Actual Occupancy", it does not let me to complet the tables Pif3-2 and Pif3-3, acctually we can't see them, but If we select that option two times , the tables are shown in the template. but after saved we can't see them. On the other hand, if we choose the option "Estimated Occupancy" the same tables are shown in the template.
At the same time we are looking at the CS appendix 1 , page 611 "core and shell appendix 1" : default occupancy counts , and i have another question about it, if the proyect is core and shell, Must the "Default Occupancy" option be selected and fill out the tables by using the appendix 1 criteria?. which one is the better option in this case?

Living with LEED Online - quirks, bugs and hiccups

PIf1

June 13, 2011

Has anyone wrestled with the fact that LOv3 PIf1 reads like it is intended ONLY for all-new projects? We have an addition/renovation to a large hospital and none of the questions asked deal with that sacred "LEED Project Boundary" so often referenced in the past. Just for one example; our $5M addition has no new parking, but the question asks "How many parking spaces dose this building has?" The ONLY choices are (a) know what they really meant to ask and answer that instead of the question asked, or (2) answer the questions asked and know that some of your credits will get challenged!
On a related front, we are wrestling with HOW to comply with PIf1 Energy usage data reporting because the area of addition/ renovation will not be separately metered, and reporting usage by the ENTIRE hospital is utterly meaningless: What to do? Anyone? Thanks

LOv3 Tips

This may be old to others by now: The biggest tip I got resulted from a complaint about having to cycle through the scorecard when checking progress on numerous credit forms; my first LOv3 project, it took me 3 hrs every week JUST TO LOOK AT what consultants did 9or didn't do). Nabeel Chowdhury, at the USGBC, told me that, when looking at a particular credit form, select the "Credit Information" tab at the upper left and it takes you back to the list of credits, from where you can easily select another credit form

FTE/Residence number for CHILDREN at a hospital project

FTE/Residence number for CHILDREN at a hospital project

FTE/Residence number for CHILDREN at a hospital project
0Vote up!In the FTE calculation for our Hospital project we do not address the numbers of children that are visiting the hospital.
All inpatients are considered Residential and the all outpatients are calculated as visitors.

Should we consider the number of children visiting the hospital in some way and in some calculations (e.g. water calculations?) ?

Any input would be great,
Thanks /Veronika

MPR 3.

MPR 3.

June 7, 2011

According to MPR 3 , 1. "The LEED project boundary must include all contiguous land that is associated with and supports normal building operations for the LEED project building, including all land that was or will be disturbed for the purpose of undertaking the LEED project".
This is an existing facility and there will be a building to retrofit. There is a parking lot right next to the retrofit; it will be used for materials stock, temporary workers constructions, and construction activities for the space to retrofit. Can I leave it out of the boundary? Technically I'm not disturbing the land, since this was a parking lot and still will be after construction.
Also it is not clear to me if including existing parking capacity is required, since there will be no new parking spaces, can I just draw my boundary around the building to retrofit??
Thanks

Common services

June 6, 2011

This is a retrofit of an existing office building within a medium manufacturing company. The office building is about 5000sq ft and the overall facility about
100 000sq ft. Since this is an existing space, storm water, sewer system, potable and electrical systems are shared with all the facility. Can I leave out of the boundary all those services, treatment plant, storm and sewer pipes and collectors, potable water pumping systems, etc. If not, I would have all the facility within the boundary, which don't make sense to me. At this moment I'm taking into account the office space and some hard-scape amenities such as sidewalks, parking lot and car entry to the property since those are used by the construction trucks. What do you think about my approach. Many thanks.
