LEED for Homes (LEED-H) Forum

EA 10 Renewable Energy

April 23, 2012

I have a client who wants to install PV panels, but does not have room on the roof of the potential LEED for Homes project. He has suggested two possible options that he can pursue.

1) Install the PV on the neighboring building and run the electricity to the LEED home. ( this is acceptable in LEED NC, so I would think this would be ok for LEED for HOMES)

2) Install PV on a larger roof on a building further away, where the electric can't be used directly by the home. ( I believe this would only count for an BD+C project for Green Power with RECs and not renewable energy, as the power doesn't actually get used "On-site".)

Is my reasoning correct?

Hi everybody,
If you just have sections.Pdf file thru the building, can it be used instead of internal elevations while completing PIF4, and what the caption should say then , section showing internal elev. or what ?

Confusion over Baseline DES Distribution Losses

Confusion over Baseline DES Distribution Losses

April 20, 2012

The guidance document seems very clear that the proposed design distribution losses are to be included when using option 2. In our case the facility has measured them so this part is simple.

However, there seems to be no mention of including any losses at all for the baseline plant. The guidance doc references App G, which states do not include losses for baseline and proposed (which is superseded by the Guidance document for the proposed) and it references ASHRAE 90.1 table 6.8, which of course includes chiller and boiler min efficiencies.

Does this really mean that the baseline case in option 2 should be modeled with no distribution losses?

Could one assume that because pipe insulation thicknesses are listed in Table 6.8, then we can do a calculation of what a baseline maximum pipe loss would be based on baseline minimum pipe insulation and operating temps and pipe sizes?

Any ideas, I searched the CIR's and could not find anything on this.

FTE for WEp1 in multiple building projetc

FTE for WEp1 in multiple building projetc

April 17, 2012

We have a 4 building project, it's an industrial plant. Showers and changing rooms will be concentrated in one building that wil serve the entire plant for that matter. The actual building's FTE is 13 but over 200 employees will be in and out of the building using shower facilities. How should we proceed with the FTE calculation? If we consider FTE=13, we won't be reflecting the actual use of the building. If we consider the 200 employes for the sake of WEp1, this number will not be consistent with the FTE in other credits we are seeking - SSc4.2, SSc4.3.
If anyone could shed a light on that will be really appreciated!

AGMBC for a Campus Wide Study

AGMBC for a Campus Wide Study

April 17, 2012

We are doing a study on a university campus which has had a few LEED certified projects in the past. Looking ahead, we'd like to see if there can be a guideline as to how to approach LEED certifications for future improvements on campus on a holistic approach. However, in our case we do not know where exactly the future improvements are, but they will all be on a campus of about 200 acres. Can we still creat a Master Site and seek pre-approved campus credits? Or does AGMBC only applies when you know where and what the projects are on the same campus? Thanks!

PIF4 Project Information Form 4

PIF4 Project Information Form 4

April 17, 2012

Our project’s Design Review Submittal was returned with various comments across the board (prereqs, credits and even to PI forms). The final review returned with still two open items, a prerequisite and an PI form#4. After appealing both, we got the prerequisite cleared but, to our surprise, got the PI form rejected again with comments on the projects narrative. By now, we had re-written and submitted this narrative three times and got all submitted design prerqs/credits approved. Apparently we must do something right but are not capable of writing a narrative.

Review Comment:
…’The revised LEED Credit Form narrative and a supplemental narrative have also been provided describing three aspects of the project team`s efforts to create a sustainable project.
However, the provided project narratives do not describe the process for preparing the LEED Certification application or provide examples of substantial challenges faced by the project, as required by the form.’

TECHNICAL ADVICE:
Please provide a revised narrative including a description of the process for preparing the LEED Certification application and examples of substantial challenges faced by the project team in the development of a sustainable project.

Does anyone know what that typical pitfalls for this narrative are and what we could have missed? We are not new to the LEED certification world and have certified numerous buildings. Are there any standard documents describing the process for preparing a LEED Certification? The Review Team says that we do not describe the process for preparing the LEED Certification. Our narrative describes project team, different organizations and related tasks. Also we describe the project site conditions, the process and special challenges, detailed down to the credit name. Are there any headlines available to sufficiently reply to the review comments?

Any input is highly appreciated - thanks to everyone!

Multiple buildings on podium..certifying only one building..??

April 17, 2012

Hi,

I am trying to figure out if GBCI allows certifying a building alone among multiple towers on a single plot.

The target building is a high-rise office tower located above a multi-storey podium that also has other building such as hotel tower, residential tower and small retail buildings. The podium is common for all these towers and that includes retail outlets and parking. The office tower is physically separated from other buildings (from floor 1, above podium) but is connected through the podium.

Can anybody advise if it is possible to certify only the Office tower.?

Would it be correct to use the "Warehouse, storage" gross square feet per occupant in the Reference Guide for mechanical spaces, storage rooms, loading areas and restrooms of a CS building?

Construction Impact Zone

Construction Impact Zone

April 13, 2012

Hello,

I am making the map of our anticpated construction impact zone, and I am wondering about development that is taking place outside of our LEED Boundary. My project is a small development that takes up about 2 city blocks, and will be surrounded by roads that are being built as a separate project (they are outside of the LEED ND Boundary). I have included these features on our maps before in order to give USGBC a sense of what the end development will look like, but am not counting them as part of the LEED ND zone.

In calculating the construction impact zone, do I need to take these additional improvements into account? Or can I extend the impact zone from around my buildings as per the construction documents, and count the land impacted by the Non-LEED portion as a separate project.
