Hotel rooms- interior lighting requirements

NC-2009 SSc8: Light Pollution Reduction
posted by Jaida Anderson-Lozano on Jul 18, 2012, 3:51 am

We are building a hotel with LEED NC v2009. If we can prove that all interior lighting has no direct line of sight do we still need to comply with option 1: reduced input power or option 2: shielding? Or can the hotel rooms be excluded from this part of the requirement? How can a hotel comply with these requirements when the intent of a hotel room is to allow the occupant ability to change the shading and lighting as they need. Of course all other areas of the hotel beyond hotel rooms will prove compliance with one of the interior lighting requirement options. Thanks for the input. SSc8 ...

Clerestory windows

Would clerestory windows be required to have automatic shades if the project uses down lights located below the windows? Technically, these lights would not be in direct line-of-sight of the windows. SSc8 ...

Bollard lighting

It seems like most bollard lights emit light straight out to the sides at 180 or 360 deg spreads. Therefore allowing a lot of light to be emitted above 90 deg from nadir. Does anybody have experience with specifying compliant bollard lights? SSc8 ...

Property boundary at center of roadway

NC-2009 SSc8: Light Pollution Reduction
posted by Anders Olson on Sep 4, 2012, 12:22 pm

The property line for a LEED NC Retail project I am working on extends to the center of the abutting roadway. If we use this as our LEED project boundary and therefore the lighting boundary for the purposes of the light trespass analysis, would we need to account for street lighting if present? The street lighting would not be part of the project scope, and would be installed and operated by the municipality. LEED Interpretation 10114 (https://www.usgbc.org/leedinterpretations/LISearch.aspx?liaccessid=10114) touches on the topic of property boundaries, but does not resolve this question specifically....

Lighting Boundary question

NC-2009 SSc8: Light Pollution Reduction

I have a project building pursuing certification that is located on a campus. There is a LEED Interpretation that states the Lighting Boundary can be extended to the property line (#10114, 11/1/2011). For this project, the property line would be the campus boundary. Then, would all lights within the campus boundary have to comply with the SSc8 requirements, or just those that apply to the project? SSc8 ...

SSc8 for Multiple Buildings- what's the boundary?

NC-2009 SSc8: Light Pollution Reduction

We are contemplating seeking this credit for a multiple building project. There are 4 buildings, they all belong to the same owner. Since the credit cannot be pursuded as a campous credit, therefore I cannot consider the LEED Campus boundary as my reference line to meet the requirements of the LZ zones. So what should I consider as the boundary? Would it be the LEED project boundary of each building?? This last option doesn't make much sense though since the boundary of the buildings will mostly still be inside of the LEED campus boundary and not outside the LEED scope! Confusing... SSc8 ...

Light Trespass- building adjacent to public alley

NC-2009 SSc8: Light Pollution Reduction

Our project has a rear service entrance off a public alley. At this entrance the face of building is set 5 feet back from the property line and 7.5 feet back from the face of curb at the alley. In this situation may we use face of curb for the 0.10 horizontal and vertical fc limit (LZ2) or must we use the property line (which is the LEED boundary)? Thanks very much for your assistance. property line vs road

NC-2009 SSc8: Light Pollution Reduction

I have a couple projects where the property line falls a few feet from reaching the bordering roadway. In these cases, can the lighting boundary extend to the center of the road? For all intents and purposes, this strip of land between the property line and road is part of the project, and will not be developed on by another project. SSc8 ...

Occupancy Sensor in Parking Lot?

NC-2009 SSc8: Light Pollution Reduction
posted by Heather Holdridge on Dec 13, 2012, 6:41 pm

If we find the right kind of light fixture to be installed in the parking lot which can work well with an occupancy sensor, we will be able to reduce a lot of exterior light pollution for our project. Is this an acceptable strategy for this credit? If yes, then how should we go about documenting the credit. SSc8 ...
