Avoid Unvented Gas Heaters

by
Strong influence by the unvented appliance industry has made it more difficult for states and provinces to prohibit these products. Today, only California has a ban on unvented appliances.

Let me get right to the point: unvented gas (and kerosene) space heaters and fireplaces are a bad idea. Don't install one.

Get rid of CFCs—if you can afford to

If your building doesn’t have CFC refrigerants, or if they’re easily eliminated, then you’re in position to easily earn this prerequisite.

Even If your base building systems do use CFCs, you can still earn this prerequisite. You’ll need to either implement a five-year CFC phase-out plan or show that both conversion and replacement of your equipment is not economically feasible.

Got a light switch or task light?

The requirements of this credit—providing lighting controls for at least 50% of occupants—are not technically difficult to achieve. Virtually all existing buildings have at least two light settings in group spaces, and task lighting is common, easy, and affordable

Documentation may be time-consuming

You will need to conduct a thorough inventory of lighting controls to verify compliance. This documentation effort is doable, but can become tedious and time-consuming for large buildings with many different types of spaces or multiple tenants.

Achievable prerequisite

This prerequisite is highly achievable, and worth doing, because it will give you valuable information on the performance and efficiency of your operations.

It’s all about documentation

You’ll need to develop documentation that incorporates operational best practices to earn this prerequisite. The focus is on documenting standard operating procedures (SOPs) and best practices for building personnel and establishing a baseline approximation of building energy efficiency, major end-uses, and potential opportunities to reduce energy consumption.
