Lake|Flato developed a project process road map as an internal project management tool over a decade ago, and we're looking into updating it. It serves as a sort of "checklist" of major design, sustainability, and QA/QC milestones for each project phase. I know we've talked about similar tools at other firms at past SDL summits, so wanted to see if anyone would be willing to share theirs with us as reference. Lake|Flato would be happy to share ours as soon as we finish updating! Thanks
You rely on LEEDuser. Can we rely on you?
LEEDuser is supported by our premium members, not by advertisers.
Ditto! Kirksey is going through a similar process. Our drawing/documentation practices have evolved as the software options have evolved, but our sustainability overlay has not kept up
Feels like there's a working group here forming and I'd love to be involved! We are working internally on this as well, specifically at the intersection of our Building Science / Consulting and Engineering practices.
We are working on mapping our overall sustainable process - so far completing a resource that speaks to how Passive House Certification (via Phius) amends the design deliverable process. I'm happy to share and second the working group idea!
I second Sarah's comment - I was thinking this is starting to sound like a small working group that should get together to do a show and tell. Happy to put my name in the hat as ringleader to try and get us scheduled to catch up. We're in the same boat of updating that kind of sustainability overlay for our QA/QC process.
Aley
Not sure how many people you define as small. If you'd take another volunteer, I'd gladly join the group. We have a general sustainability overlay for our QA/QC processes, but are working on getting it more fully implemented and developing it to a detail level that helps our teams really integrate it into the flow of the project.
Love this thread! Thanks for starting Heather!!
We have several documents that we piece together along the way, such as Owner's Project Requirements, Basis of Design, Integrative Process Worksheet, Site Assessment Worksheet, and even the LEED scorecard in some instances.
We also have a 'Designers Guide to Incorporating Sustainable Strategies" that is in progress.
I would be very interested to be a part of working group on this topic.
Thanks again Heather!!
I'd welcome the opportunity to jump in on this working group. We have a process but it could use an update.
Count me in, if there is room. We are starting this process as well (something that has been in our Sustaino Action Plan for some years) now that I'm focusing full time on firm efforts.
We are working on this exact topic as well. Also interested in being part of a working group, if there's still room!
Count me in for this group, too! I have been building a series of resources over the past 6 months related to sustainable design process, but will be making a more comprehensive management tool later this year that ties them all together. Would love to hear everyone's thoughts and brainstorm together.
Woudl be so glad to be a part of a working group! WE are working to put together a "multfamily stance" on various certifications, for example, as one guidesheet currently under development...
I’m also interested. At GBBN, we have the Sustainability Integration Process (I should have given it a more exciting name) that I’m working to update, integrate with our QAQC process, and generally make clearer and palatable to project teams.
Thanks,

I'd like to participate in this group as well. I have developed a roadmap for our project teams to use. It is essentially a list of sequential design steps that we "require" teams to use. Success has been mixed and I would love to share what we have learned and hear what others are doing.
Small world! This has also been an ongoing effort at AHA and we'd be happy to participate.
I am interested in a working group on this topic as well. I’ve been working on project process improvements at different scales for Orcutt|Winslow for the past two years. We have been piloting several initiatives with some success.

We are working on similar process map and integration with QA/QC at Boulder Associates. Count me in as well!
I am interested as well. Similar to many we are working through this process inhouse and would love the opportunity to hear others experiences.
I am also interested in this. as with others, we are currently revamping and mapping these processes. I'd love to compare notes!
We have recently updated the (many!) goals of our sustainability action plan. To go along with the implementation, we have created a number of management and education tools and processes. So far it seems to be working better than anything in the past. I’d be excited to join the working group to share and to learn from others successes.

Ditto! We are in the process of overhauling / standardizing our entire project delivery framework, so I would love to join this working group to learn from others (and share what I'm sure will be our challenges). Thanks to Heather for kicking off this thread and to Allison for immediately jumping in and offering to ringlead!
Love it, y'all! Stay tuned - I'll send a meeting poll out in a hot minute here and we can get something going; hang tight - figured it was worthwhile to let this sit a bit and see how many other people raised their hands to play =)
Aley
*Raises Hand* Same here, we've been working through planning and graphic representations of a roadmap for project teams to reference. I would love to be a part of this conversation as well.
I'd love to join the conversation as well, coming from a GC's perspective. We have a visual sustainability roadmap but varies on our project delivery and needs some improvement. Thanks for sending the doodle Aley

Hey everyone,
If you want to take the leap and make this a project long timeline I'd be interested in bringing the contractor perspective to the conversation. Reaching your project goals within the confines of estimating, scheduling, and logistics is a really interesting subject. We have our own project goals the the SCL group has a rating platform for contractor sustainabiltiy (The Contractors Commitment) that is a great outline for how we can merge design/client goals with construction goals for more wholistic designs.
I'm interested too! We're actively discussing this internally.
I too would be interested in what I can from from and contribute to this "small group"! I am brand new to the SDL network, but BCJ is also in the early phase of updating our SAP, including how sustainability integrates into our design process, to make our process more intentional and repeatable at all scales.
Thanks, Heather, for starting this chain! I would also love to join a working group on this. Goody Clancy has used a couple of different roadmapping models--including both a high level and a highly detailed version--that we would be happy to share and critique with the group.
We have had a process checklist in place for a few years, including client research in the marketing phase through checking EPDs in the CA phase. Required client sustainability workshop, early energy modeling, embodied carbon modeling, and materials + health training (twice), and much more. It’s intentionally one page (but small font) at the request of the project managers.
We are updating our SAP this fall, which is one reason why we’ve spent 18 months on the Path To Zero Cabron series so we understand what we should focus on toward zero carbon. https://lmnarchitects.com/lmn-research/path-to-zero-carbon-series
Sorry for the additional spam; LMN would love to be involved.

I'm in! We have a version of this at our firm but it's in bits and pieces in a Design Review Checklist, a QA/QC checklist, some carbon-focused checklists, Kick off meeting checklists, etc. Not in one consolidated process document. I am inspired to work on this and would love to trade info with you all in a subgroup.
Poll sent; I think it got cut off before Kjell and Amy layered in. Kjell and Amy (and anyone else who adds onto this chain), to avoid reopening the poll let me get the meeting set and then I'll make sure the invite gets forwarded to you two and anyone else who adds in from here on out.
Aley
Hi Allison, I'd like to join as well. We're just in the process of rolling out / beta testing a new project process roadmap at P&W Seattle. At this point I think it's gone beyond a small working group and into an SDL-wide conversation :)
Late to the party but also interested in the working group/conversation - please forward the invite! We are at the beginning of figuring out our design process and what tools we have/need to acquire to support it.
I heard there was a party?
Count me in. FOMO fo sho.
Plus one more here! Please forward the invite.
We have been focusing on early design phase only, love to see how others carrying out the process to the finish line.
Yes please
Happy to join.
Thanks,
Tamar

We have a timeline of sustainability-related efforts tied into the project delivery and QC process. It definitely needs some updating. Can't wait to see what will come of this discussion.
I am also interested. We have a loose process that tries to accommodate all kinds of typologies and goal levels, but I’m sure it could be better.

I'd love to participate from the GC perspective.
Very excited to join this conversation too! We are currently reviewing our sustainability action plan at MJMA and having the same conversations in house - would be great to connect with everyone to combine efforts! Please forward the invite if I'm not too late to the game.
Thank you,
Francesca
I am playing catchup on this thread. Would be interested in learning more and taking part. I changed firms a while back and need to get people thinking about our projects and the sustainability impact on all of them not just a select few.
yes, please.
Please, add me as well.
