Glass Recycling - IGUs

Does anyone have an experience on recycling/reusing architectural glazing? We have a sizable glazing replacement project, and I am realizing how difficult it is to find a way to prevent the glazing from going into the landfill. So far, I have reached out to Terrazzo (aggregate) manufacturers, Glass Recycling Coalition, Architectural Glass Manufacturers, with no luck. Any suggestions, thoughts, ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Seonhee,  You could try reaching out to Details Deconstruction, 2507 N Howard St, Baltimore or if your project site is somewhere else then check the building product decon/reuse map at  https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1Ys-9Rx-6uTgZr67vBscQL4ntHUzTlus0...

Resource credit goes to the Material Flows and Social Impacts working group on the peer networks hub that Laura Soma, Yarden Harari, and Stephanie Dalo are chairing and the member group team. Good luck in your efforts! Mike

Hi Seonhee, I would also suggest contacting Amanda Kaminsky, Building Product Ecosystems LLC... amanda@buildingproductecosystems.org. Good luck and let us know what you learn!

https://www.strategicmaterials.com/suppliers/ Contact this company Strategic Materials. They have been in the business of recycling glass since the late 1800s. There are jurisdictions where glass is not recovered mostly due to decisions made at the municipal level. Not sure what the situation is where you are. But with a sizable project and their need for material, they may be able to devise a way to take your IGUs. Laura Henneman with that company presented at Greenbuild in Atlanta on an invited session I helped to assemble on the state of the recycling industry. I'll give you one more place to reach out - https://pozzotive.com/ They are using the recycled glass as an SCM for concrete.

Great topic! I also have an abundance of IGU Samples that I am trying to divert. Too big for the current requirements of Save a Sample for Students.

Thanks Mike for shouting out our map! Will definitely be adding all of these suggestions if we don't have them included already. Please bring on more ideas of people/orgs for diversion / salvage / refabrication / reuse of building materials. Email me if you want to share a bundle / add to the map database directly, or join our initiative team (yarden.harari@crtkl.com)

Resource Central In Boulder, CO should definitely be added to your map! https://resourcecentral.org/reuse/

Depending on your project location Ripple Glass in Kansas City takes windows (not laminated) with the frames removed. https://www.rippleglass.com/where-to-recycle/. I haven't worked with them since pre-Covid so probably good to give them a call and see what they currently offer.
