NC-2009 IEQp2:Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS) Control

Emergency Egress Doors and Utility Space Doors

Can a smoking area can be located next to an "emergency/fire egress only" door? Also can a smoking area it can be located within 25 feet of a door that only services a utility space? This utility space is only accessible from the outside of the building, and sealed off from the rest of the interior on the inside.

Sara, LEED refers to building entries in its policy here, not "main" entries or any other qualification.I've seen enough "emergency exits" used constantly by in-the-know occupants to know that such doors can be open a lot of the time, potentially introducing ETS.

Tristan, When you said to Sara, "LEED refers to building entries in its policy here, not "main" entries or any other qualification." and "I've seen enough "emergency exits" used constantly by in-the-know occupants to know that such doors can be open a lot of the time, potentially introducing ETS." Does it mean that it is prohibited by GBCI to locate theses smoking areas near emergency doors ? i am pretty sure that my client could say "why is it prohited by LEED since emergency doors are not allowed to be used except in case of emergency ?". Sorry, for answering that, i am not familiar with GBCI policy and requirements. Thanks

Tristan, do you have an idea about this question or should I ask directly to GBCI ? Thanks

Loic, it is possible that GBCI would see this differently—only a CIR, or submitting for a review would tell you for sure. However, the credit language clearly prohibits smoking 25 feet from building "entries." It doesn't specify regularly used entries, as in IEQc5. It simply says "entries."
