I have been recently told that I need more proof on the distance of the Steel Mill to the job site to justify regional materials.
I submitted the Mill Certs which list the Steel Mill name and location. I mapped this location to the Job site to compile my mileage. Now the A/E is asking for actual screen shots of each Mill Location to the Job Site and Each Extraction Point to the job site Pictured on a map for proof. I feel this is pretty ridiculous if you already have the addresses.
Also, we are asked to complete the LEED PRoduct Data Sheets with all information. Then also asked for this map, and also asked to get a letter for the particular job site from each Mill showing recycled content and Extraction locations. I feel like LEED is just getting out of control on documentation. This has taken me weeks to put all of this together for 1 job and I have 4 LEED jobs currently on my desk. Someone please tell me all of this is truly not necessary. Its like pulling teeth to get these letters from the MILL

Things might be evolving on the GBCI side but I have never heard of documentation for regional materials distances being emphasized by anyone. I agree this seems over the top. I would be curious where the A/E is getting this documentation zeal—have you asked them if it is coming from GBCI comments?

When I use https://www.distance-cities.com/ to get AIR miles (note- it also gives driving miles) it gives a map showing starting & ending locations which one can zoom in on. You can search by exact address or by zip code. You can then do a screen shot of this & put into Word & save file or you can "print to pdf" that search & save as a pdf file. I use this as backup of the mileage and save efile into the product folder. Yes I create a folder for each product i'm getting any/all green info on. You can then inform the A/E you have such data but don't need to submit to them. You can provide to them one as an example. This is one approach & really doesn't take much more time then getting the mileage itself - just a few extra seconds for creating the pdf of the mileage search. Debra

Heather, I hope it's not our mills that are causing frustration getting the information you need. If it is, feel free to contact me directly and I'll make sure we get you what you need. We may be able to provide additional information if it's helpful and you're seeing these requests frequently. Please let me know what would be useful.
Historically, we've seen differing documentation requirements if the GBCI reviewer is an employee of USGBC/GBCI or if they are a contract worker. Apparently the contract workers have a "more rigid" set of work instructions which triggers the request for more information or confirmation. Again, if you're being asked for more information for steel products than you are with other products. please let me know and I'll spend some time sorting it out with USGBC.

Thank you Keith. I have not had any trouble with Nucor getting your recycled content letters recently. But, I do have questions in regards to what I am being asked for on this particular job I am currently working on. I have your email. I will reach out in the morning. Thank you!
