NC-2009 MRc4:Recycled Content

Can we calculate and apply recycled content in reused items?

We are reusing playground equip from the existing bldg and are going to relocate them and use them in our new building/site. We are not going for MRc3 Resource Reuse due to not being able to reach the required threshold. However, IF we would be able to track the recycled content of the reused items (manufacturer's product info) could we use it towards the recycling total for the project? Since the "cost" of these items would be zero, it wouldn't have an effect on the total cost, but it could add to our recycling totals. Any thoughts?

I don't have any GBCI rulings to back this up, but my gut would be "no," because it seems like the existing project that bought the equipment new would "own" the "environmental benefit" of the recycled content.Since your project is already stuck with the equipment, it doesn't make sense to me that you would get credit for choosing a recycled content product.I think the area you could more logically get credit is MRc2.Any other thoughts?

Several months have passed, so this posting may no longer be relevant. It just caught my eye. MR Credits 3 thru 7 only evaluate materials in CSI MasterFormat 2004 Spec Divisions 03-10 & parts of Divisions 31 & 32. Playground equipment falls into MasterFormat Division 11, so even if you had purchased the equipment, you probably could not count it toward these Credits or in your Total Cost. Nevertheless, reusing the playground equipment is laudable, and it may provide more of a symbolic expression of good stewardship.
