SCDL Monthly Calls

Hello Sustainable Community Design Leaders,

Now that everyone invited to the SCDL calls has access to this forum, I want to shift us over here for announcements and reminders, so here's your reminder that this month’s call is next Monday, March 21st, 11am–12pm ET (8-9am PT). Back to our usual time!

You can view the agenda here. Christine has agreed to share a bit about her experience at the Ecocity World Summit, plus we’ll spend some more time exploring what we want to accomplish together this year. There will also be time for you all to share anything you’d like input on from the group.

Reminder: We're no longer using Google calendar invites for these calls. I've registered all of you for the Zoom meetings for the rest of the year. You should have received an email from Zoom last week, which includes a link to add any/all of the calls to your calendar. If you have any trouble, let me know and I’ll resend.

Hope you can join us!
Jen

I'm glad to see we're getting used to this forum! As a quick refresher: if you respond to a post via email, it will show up as a reponse in the forums. To check that you're responding directly to that person, look for their email in the reply line, instead of "no-reply@buildinggreen.com" or another generic address. (Not to assume that these posts were meant to be emails, but just in case.) I'm glad this question was posted here, because it gives me the chance to issue a correction! Monday's meeting is at 2pm ET/11am PT, our actual usual time. Sorry for any confusion, and thanks for catching that! I hope to see you all then. Jen Z :)

Hello Fellow SCDL Members:  I am very pleased to have been able to join this group and look forward getting to know you all and to working together to exchange information that leads to improvements to the sustainability of the communities in which we work, live, and visit.  Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend the meeting tomorrow due to a conflicting flight, but I will be sure to be available for future meetings and will monitor the listserve.  On a related note, this Harvard Business Review (HBR) article, We Need Universal ESG Accounting Standards, provides a brief but excellent overview of efforts to date at Environmental-Social-Governance (ESG) accounting, including their limitations and problems, and underscores the potential of the new International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) to create a unified system for companies to report their ESG performance to investors – in my opinion, such a system is critical to enabling investors to understand ESG information and to use it to make good decisions addressing associated issues, particularly climate change.  As H. James Harrington said, “Measurement is the first step that leads to control and eventually to improvement.”  PDF also attached since the link is behind a subscriber paywall.  Finally, I am based in Washington, DC, so if you are here too or will be in the area, let’s figure out how to connect safely in-person – all the best in the meantime.  ~Brian

Hello SCDL-ers, Here are the notes from yesterday’s call. Christine shared a bit about the Ecocity World Summit, then we set some priorities for the year based on your feedback, and sparked some great discussion around EcoDistricts, certifications, and the state of Urban Design in the U.S. I only heard one request to change the meeting time, which isn’t enough to go through the whole process of trying to find another time that works for everyone. Please let me know if you’re also not able to make our usual time on a regular basis! If there are enough of you, we definitely can look for a better time. Thanks, hope to see you in May!

Hello Sustainable Community Design Leaders, Here's your reminder that this month’s call is next Monday, May 16th, 2–3pm ET (11am-12pm PT). You can view the agenda here. We have quite a few items but our primary goal will be to define the tangible outcomes (action, projects, research) that you want to work on first. If anyone is having trouble getting these meetings on their calendar or getting onto the Zoom, please let me know. Hope you can join us!

Hello Sustainable Community Design Leaders, Here are the notes from May's call. Thank you for your input on rescheduling this month's call. Based on your responses, I'm going to move it one week later, to Monday, June 27th, 2-3pm ET (11am-12pm PT). I know some of you may not be able to make it, so I apologize for the inconvenience. We should be back to our regular schedule in July. You can view the agenda for the upcoming call here. We have quite a few items but most will be "if time allows". Our primary goal will be to share some case studies and begin pulling them together into a collection. Please come prepared with three case studies you'd like to share and discuss. If anyone is having trouble getting these meetings on their calendar or getting onto the Zoom, please let me know. Hope you can join us!

Hi Jenn, Thanks for your email. Somehow I am out of the loop on scheduling. I tried to log in last week but found nobody there. Unfortunately I do not have today’s meeting on my schedule and I have numerous conflicts that will prevent me from attending. I will look forward to the notes. Thanks, Tim Timothy W. Hi Sustainable Community Design Leaders, Apologies for any confusion around rescheduling this month's call. We didn't have anyone join yesterday, so we'll try again for July. Hi SCDL friends, Here's your reminder that this month’s call is next Monday, August 15th, 2–3pm ET (11am-12pm PT). Attendance has dwindled to almost zero this summer. To help me figure out if this is just a seasonal lull or not, please either attend this call or let me know (via response to this post or via email) if you cannot attend but would like to see these monthly calls continue. From there, we'll determine next steps for this network. You can view the agenda here. We have quite a few items but our primary goal will be collecting your thoughts to help inform the 2023 focus and direction for the Peer Networks. After that we can move into some of the other conversations that have been suggested. If you're having trouble with the Zoom, you can re-register using this link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZ0ucuugqj4iE9zvuC1BN8bnte3R0Mam6SDY I hope all is well in your worlds!

Hi Jen,   With apologies I will not be abke to attend the meeting on Monday as we are trying to finish our InfraCenters, LLC investment work and as luck would hve it our advisor can only meet with us during that time. I would like to continue the meetings. Thanks, Tim

Hi Jen, As mentioned earlier, I have amother recurring call at the same time of our SCDL monthly call and unfortunately will miss our call tomorrow.

I hope the monthly calls continue and we narrow down on the few areas to focus on as a group. Ok with whatever the group decides.

thank you, Yogesh

Mon, 08/15/2022 - 12:07

Hi Jen, Unfortunatley I won't be able to make this call either today.  I appreciate the calls but am wondering if we should move to a quarterly schedule, and as Yogesh suggested that we narrow down the group's focus?   Brian

Mon, 08/15/2022 - 17:23

Great, thanks Tim, Yogesh, and Brian for your input. Hopefully I'll still see a few of you on the call soon, and I'll report back!

Fri, 08/19/2022 - 15:15

Hi SCDL-ers, Thank you for the feedback! It sounds like this has indeed been just a summer lull and we’re looking forward to revitalizing the group in the fall. The notes from Monday's call are here. We're going to stick with monthly calls, at least for now. We discussed the quarterly idea, but it felt too infrequent, and missing just one meant a six-month gap in connecting with the group. We also talked about a new model for our calls: each of you will take turns presenting a case study or other topic of interest and opening up a discussion on it. Christine and Nicole volunteered to kick us off for September and October. Don’t forget that this forum is available to you in between calls to discuss anything that’s on your mind! See you in September,
Jen

Hello Sustainable Community Design Leaders, Here's your reminder that this month’s call is next Monday, September 19th, 2–3pm ET (11am-12pm PT). You can view the agenda here. Our primary goal will be revitalizing the group and testing a new format for these meetings. We'll have a presentation from Christine leading into a discussion on Environmental Justice Criteria. If you're having trouble with the Zoom, you can re-register using this link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZ0ucuugqj4iE9zvuC1BN8bnte3R0Mam6SDY Hope you can join us!

Hello Sustainable Community Design Leaders, Here's your reminder that this month’s call is next Monday, October 17th, 2–3pm ET (11am-12pm PT). I'm out of town but Nadav is filling in for me, so you'll be in good hands! You can view the agenda here. The primary goal will be to explore last month's exciting ideas for this network's next project, and define what exactly the outcome will be. We'll also have a case study presentation from Nicole that will inform that discussion. If you're having trouble with the Zoom, you can re-register using this link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZ0ucuugqj4iE9zvuC1BN8bnte3R0Mam6SDY Hope you can join!

Hello Sustainable Community Design Leaders, I'm looking forward to seeing you again on this month’s call next Monday, November 21st, 2–3pm ET (11am-12pm PT). You can view the agenda here. The primary goal will be continuing to define the framework that you started working on last month, especially dialing in the audience, purpose, etc. If you're having trouble with the Zoom, you can re-register using this link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZ0ucuugqj4iE9zvuC1BN8bnte3R0Mam6SDY Hope you can join!

Hello Sustainable Community Design Leaders, Here are the notes from November's call. We're making some exciting progress toward our community design framework! Nadav and I will both be out of the office next week, so we're going to skip December's call. I hope all of you have some rejuvenating time off with loved ones, and we will pick up fresh in January. In the meantime, there was a request from the group to continue work in the Miro board so we can make more progress during our meeting time together. Yogesh volunteered to lead the creation of a table of contents, and everyone else is encouraged to contribute to that table of contents or anywhere else on the board. If you'd like notifications when someone makes a change to this board, see this tutorial to turn those on. It would be great to see some kind of engagement from everyone before our next meeting! Our January call is scheduled for MLK Day. Please take a minute (it shouldn't take any longer than that) to fill out this quick poll to see if we need to reschedule. Any responses by end of day Tuesday, January 3rd will be taken into account and I'll post an update here later that week. Thanks all!
Jen

Hello Sustainable Community Design Leaders, Apologies for any confusion over last month's canceled call. We're doing our best by notifying you of all changes through this forum and keeping your calendar invites updated. If you have other suggestions for how we could handle scheduling, let me know. There weren't enough responses to the poll to make a change, so our January call will remain as scheduled: Monday, January 16th, 2–3pm ET (11am-12pm PT). Our main topic for the next call will be the future of this network, including structure and membership, in light of BuildingGreen's priorities for 2023. If you can't attend and would like to weigh in, please reach out to me. Here is the Zoom link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89352845898?pwd=b2M1VjF3Y1JKRjAyOU5QVDRjLzg3dz09 Happy New Year, I hope you're all off to a great start

Hello Sustainable Community Design Leaders, Because of the holiday we didn't have anyone on January's call, so we're trying again this month! We have another Monday holiday, so we'll need to reschedule to Monday, February 27th, 2–3pm ET (11am-12pm PT). This is one week later than originally scheduled. Again, our main topic for this call will be the future of this network, including structure and membership, in light of BuildingGreen's priorities for 2023. If you can't attend and would like to weigh in, please reach out to me. Here is the Zoom link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89352845898?pwd=b2M1VjF3Y1JKRjAyOU5QVDRjLzg3dz09 Jen

Hello SCDL, Since we didn't reschedule this month's call, I'm hoping you have it on your calendars for next Monday, March 20th, 2–3pm ET (11am-12pm PT). You can view the agenda here. On the last call we had a great conversation about the future of the network, acknowledging that BuildingGreen's priorities have shifted and we need to reduce our level of involvement with this group. You can see the notes from that call here. We've taken your input about the value of this network, talked internally, and decided what we can offer that we think will best meet everyone's needs. The primary goal for Monday's call will be to discuss the new format, and make plans for how and when to make the change. Here is the Zoom link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89352845898?pwd=b2M1VjF3Y1JKRjAyOU5QVDRjLzg3dz09 I hope to see you then!

Hi Jen, I will be out of the country on Monday and unable to attend. Would you/Building Green be able to send an email update after the call? I’m curious about our new format / organization structure and remain committed to the group (and Building Green) in whatever shape that takes. Hi SCDL Team and Jen:
Unfortunately, I am not able to attend our Monday meetings, including today's meeting (March 20th, 2023), given a recurring conflict I have. Thank you for providing updates on the agendas and meeting minutes. Please feel free to reach out in case if I can be of any further help.  Thanks, Yogesh
