Hi Simon,
Based on Example 2 in the reference guide, I think you can exclude a direct/indirect light as long as there's no view down into the top of the light from another space above.

Could you please explain to me what do you mean by "a direct/indirect light as long as there's no view down into the top of the light from another space above"? I'm having trouble understanding this exception. I tried to read and reread several times without being able to understand.

The exception is for: "indirect uplighting fixtures, provided there is no view down into these uplights from a regularly occupied space above"
For example: a two-story lobby with pendant indirect fixtures and an office space on an intermediate floor that is open to the lobby and you can see down into the light fixtures in the looby
