LCA and EPDs

Buildings LCA is conducted to measure the impact of building materials..as well as building use etc. So why is EPDs credit needed? It says EPDs address human health, ecological and land use issues that LCA is limited. But EPDs are also based on LCA work?

Neslihan, The Building Life-cycle Impact Reduction credit deals with the reuse of buildings and the reduction of building-scale life-cycle impacts including the project’s structure and enclosure. You are correct in that the BPDO - Environmental Product Declaration credit is also based on LCA, but is at a product level. It is possible to evaluate whole building life-cycle impacts as well as specify products that have also been evaluated through LCA and have associated EPDs. Does this help your understanding of the difference?

The major benefit of having LEED incentivize manufacturers to develop product-specific EPDs is that it leads to more comparative information being publicly available on performance of specific products. In absence of incentive for this, most LCA work would rely on average product performance data and having facts on the differences brought by a better product would not be readily quantifiable.
