Since 2001, John has supported clients in shaping sustainability strategies that succeed for the environment, people, and for the bottom line. An accomplished professional specializing in sustainable building design, construction, as well as the management of strategic sustainability initiatives, he is most inspired by the opportunities that emerge when addressing challenges through a lens of sustainability.
His experience spans strategic planning for sustainability, the development and management of sustainability initiatives, and the development and reporting of environmental metrics. John is a process champion with the ability to bring together disparate stakeholders around a common vision, goals and strategies by drawing on cost effectiveness, current market trends, and technological feasibility, as evidenced by his experience facilitating interdisciplinary design processes for large private, federal and institutional buildings and campuses including a growing number of mixed-use multifamily projects and developments, as well as one of the country’s most complex LEED projects (Department of Homeland Security). He has also done a significant amount of international work–particularly in the Middle East–including sustainable design and LEED for Princess Nora bint Abdul Rahman and King Saud bin Abdulaziz University campuses, Kuwait Gulf Oil Company, Kuwait Oil Company, and sustainable design recommendations for the Grand Mosque expansion in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.
John’s professional focus has been on health in the built environment from air quality through materials health and transparency, active design, and biophilia. To that end, he is one of the first RESET ASP, serves on the HPDC Technical Committee, is a trained Living Building Challenge Auditor on behalf of the ILFI, and promotes heath through his roles as a Fitwel Ambassador and WELL Faculty. With John’s support, both design team and manufacturer clients are able to navigate the healthy materials and transparency landscape including HPDs, the LBC Red List, and leading product libraries and tools.
Before joining YR&G, John was a core member of the sustainability team at a large design firm and led sustainable design on projects across offices–specifically on campuses and within the Science+Technology market sector.
