Has anyone done inherent bias training in their firm, and if so, how'd it go? Do you have someone you'd recommend as a trainer/facilitator? Thanks!

Hi Michelle
We are working with two professors from Tufts on this and had collected a list of consultants, but many were too corporate and some were focusing on EDI which wasn't quite what we wanted. I will assemble the list and post here.
A shoutout that becoming a JUST organization helped focus us and has led to some great frank conversations and self evaluations. It's a work in progress.

Our firm used EqualityWorks, NW. Their work with us was truly transformational and well worth the time and effort.

Oh my goodness I was just asking about this.
Yes, please share!
We just finished training our company nation-wide using Phil Claybrooke with Metrics2Results. philc@metrics2results.com

he was great!
At the risk of seeming self-promoting Betsy and my consultant group
includes a fantastic woman, Saskia Dennis-van Dijl
who leads firms
in diversity, equity and inclusion workshops - not the same thing though
but relevant. Locally our YWCA leads workshops on inherent bias. Perhaps
they work with businesses as well?
thanks

Yes! How do we connect with you and her on this topic?
We have had two all office sessions with EqualityWorks NW led by Michael and Juanita, plus several breakout sessions for different tiers of seniority. They have been wonderful. https://equalityworksnw.com/about-us/

I will second Mary Ann's endorsement of Saskia Dennis-van Dijl, who is really great at this. Full disclosure: we're independent consultants and don't benefit when she gets work. That being said, she is great. cameronmacallister.com

Thanks for these great recommendations. HOK is looking for someone too. Most that we’ve spoken with are strong with gender biased, but we are also looking someone strong with implicit bias towards other minority groups as well. Do any of the people recommended so far, or others, meet this qualification? We found one that we like but her fees are in a different league as the others, and out of our price range.
Thanks,
Mara

We (Stantec) are holding 2-day Unconscious Bias training for senior staff next week with a facilitator out of New York, Mia Scharphie. I’ll let you know how it goes!

Hi Mara –
I thought EqualityWorks did a great job addressing bias from many different angles. I will try to dig up agendas from the workshops to share.

For those interested in the self-guided discussion either in conjunction with formal training or independently, I would recommend doing the Harvard Implicit Bias Tests. https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/selectatest.html We had everyone in our firm leadership take the tests before an internal discussion on implicit biases, and it was a very helpful catalyst to starting the conversation. We requested everyone do at least 5 of the tests, though most ended up doing all of them. We didn’t see anyone’s results, but it was a helpful way to daylight the implicit biases that everyone carried and I got a lot of comments from people about how they hadn’t realized they that they held those biases. We found it to be a super helpful way to start the conversation, and it’s a free/easy thing everyone can do now.

We also did the Harvard Implicit Bias Tests and it was humbling and thought provoking for all.

In my previous reply I incorrectly stated who our facilitator was going to be… Last week we had our Unconscious Bias 2-day training, facilitated by Renee Bazile-Jones of the Canadian Center for Diversity and Inclusion and it was very well done. Focused on all forms of discrimination, bias and prejudice, what the cycles look like, and how to deal with microaggressions etc. Over the two days we were trained in how to deliver the content to the rest of the company in a 2-hour format. Highly recommended.

We have been using Dr. Heather Hackman (hackmanconsultinggroup.org) for gender equity training for several years now. I would highly recommend her. She does a wide range of social justice trainings. I'm not sure if she specifically does unconscious bias training, but it's definitely embedded in her work.
