Indoor Air Quality (monitoring)

Hello Green Gurus,

Back at the retreat in March 2021 (does anyone remember back that far?), we formed an Air Quality Working Group with members from SDL, SMEPL, and SCL. Drawing on our collective experience, standards, research, and other resources, we began navigating the murkiness of indoor air quality considerations. We came up with a LOT of ideas! Through some fits and starts, we settled on developing guidance around indoor air quality monitor considerations. We observed that in industry today, projects that install indoor air quality monitors without pursuing some sort of certification (RESET, WELL, LBC, etc) are far and few between. Some of these frameworks require a large number of monitors, so even of all the projects pursuing WELL, for instance, there are many that don’t install monitors.

In our minds, particularly if not pursuing a certification, it is better to install 1 IAQ monitor in a good location than none at all. To help encourage this trend amongst the many projects that do not install any air quality monitors, we thought the attached guidance would serve as a useful industry resource.

To that end, we would like your feedback! Let us know what you think. How can this be improved to be more useful? The audience, really, is any project team or owner that may be considering indoor air quality implications and are looking for a high-level resource with which they can begin their journey down the rabbit hole.

What’s next?

We will take all of your thoughts and comments into consideration and are hoping to be able to share this paper far and wide soon.

Once published, we will go back to our ideas list and tackle another topic.

Additional Indoor Air Quality topic ideas are also welcomed, and of course, so are additional people looking to get involved with our group.

Just ping me to add your name! jmlade (@) wightco.com

Thanks to our team (particularly for their patience and perseverance!)

Peer network IAQ paper published The latest IAQ white paper from the IAQ Working Group, "So You Have Some IAQ Monitors, What Now?" is now published on BuildingGreen with a nifty write-up by Elizabeth Waters.    https://www.buildinggreen.com/newsbrief/continuous-iaq-monitoring-how-use-endless-data This white paper comes as a sequel to one our group put together in 2022, “Considerations for Continuous Air Quality Monitoring: Simple tips for getting it right, according to IAQ consultants,” which offers guidance to building teams seeking to better understand and evaluate continuous air monitors. This link isn’t behind the paywall, so feel free to share with anyone.  There's a great summary table toward the end (page 20 or so) "Comparison of Regulatory and Green Building Frameworks for IAQ" that you might find especially useful. Full disclosure:  one of the authors is a total whack a doodle.
