Hello - We're looking into the Innovation credit for low/no mercury lamps for our CI renovation. The innovation credit has the below notice:
"Please note that since LEED O+M is a whole building rating system, when attempting an Innovation in Design point for following a LEED O+M prerequisite or credit compliance path the strategy must be applied to the entire project building."
https://www.usgbc.org/node/7433230?return=/credits/commercial-interiors/v4
So, we're parsing the language to determine if it means that the entire building must have the purchasing plan for low mercury lamps or simply the CI project area. This seems particularly restrictive for a CI project, since the clients usually don't have control of the entire building.
Thoughts?

That language is connected to the Core & Shell note in the next sentence - a CI project won't need to worry about base building purchasing.

We had discussed that idea, but then why is the statement at all in an ID+C interiors credit? We've been talking in circles....

I think the reason is that the innovation catalog links directly to a single O&M credit page in the credit database - there is no separate "LEED-CI low-mercury lamps" or "LEED-NC low-mercury lamps" credit. So you're reaching the same page with that text no matter which rating system you started in.
Probably worth emailing USGBC to get some definitive clarification for your team and suggest revising that language - you can't be the only one who isn't sure how to interpret it!

Good Point - Thanks! I'll email them right away and let folks know what we find.

Hi Anna,
I just submitted the Purchasing Lamps innovation for a v4 Retail CI project and got it without having to address the whole strip shopping center. That said I went back and looked at the Innovation language for Retail CI and now see that paragraph you cited has been added to Retail CI as well. So this is a recent change. I don't see how a CI project can have much control over the whole building or other tenant spaces.

Hi All,
I have a follow up question about this innovation credit as it applies to an interior renovation for a workplace project. The renovation itself does not necessarily include in the scope replacement of all existing lamps. Generally, does the credit require only a purchasing plan for only new lamps purchased / future relamping, or retroactively re-lamping all of the current light fixtures as well?
(I'd have to double check with the project team regarding the specs of the current installation, and whether they're already LED or low mercury - would that also be a determinant in achieving the innovation credit?).
thanks!

Hi Yarden, you don't have to replace any lamps to earn the Innovation point. The plan you develop will apply to future lamp purchases if lighting is not in your renovation scope. If you did purchase and install lamps as part of the renovation scope, you'd need to complete the USGBC MR purchasing calculator to demonstrate you're meeting the picograms/lumen-hour threshold (as well as develop the plan).
