Hi all. I know that EPDs have an expiration date listed on them, but I think I have heard of a rule that as long as the product the EPD is for is purchased within the year of expiration, it counts... Am I correct or incorrect?

Samantha, I have not heard that rule. What I would be confident in saying is that the EPD can be expired when the LEED project documentation is submitted, as long as it was valid for the product when the product was purchased. This is common, given the time lags for LEED submission, especially on larger projects.

Okay, thank you for the help. Is that stated somewhere in the Reference Guide or is this just something that has become known over time and through submissions?

Hmmm, I would have to do some more digging to find exact language that applies to this credit. I was able to locate this statement in the Reference Guide under the Sourcing of Raw Materials credit.
This gives the gist that I was speaking to: "For a product to count toward credit achievement, its report must be current for the product at its time of installation."
I am confident that this same concept applies to EPDs, as well as HPDs and other MR documentation.
It goes on to give a little bit more flexibility: "Reports published within one year of the project’s LEED registration date, or reports that cover a period that ends within that year are acceptable."
