Green Building and Mental Health

Friends,

Might anyone be aware of research studies on the beneficial mental health effects of green buildings that you could point me to?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Jason, WELL is big into citing all their research resources that shape their requirements/options. If you look at their online Standard (reference guide), you should be able to browse the topics related to mental health and see their hyperlinked resources as a starting point. Hope that helps.

Jason, I would be interested in learning what you come up with. Mental health being such a large umbrella, do you have more specific angles you are looking for? Mental health could touch on cognitive health, which as you probably know is a hot topic on which you can find multiple articles on this site and elsewhere. As far as more emotional wellbeing, the following articles may lead in some possible directions but are by no means sufficient to scratch the surface of the question: https://www.buildinggreen.com/news-analysis/study-learning-can-be-harmed-classroom-design https://www.buildinggreen.com/newsbrief/plants-offices-enhance-worker-engagement https://journals.ashs.org/hortsci/view/journals/hortsci/42/3/article-p581.xml The reason I pulled up two articles on plants is not about IAQ at all, could arguably be about biophilia, but in my opinion it would be interesting to look into the studies that show benefits of giving office workers some agency over their environment, and choosing a plant for your desk is a common example of this, as is displaying family photos. (Not such an option with hotelling, hmmmm.....) I would suggest some searching down that avenue.
