My project has 2 phases of development. Currently, we only apply LEED for phase 1. There is a big greenery area, reserved for future building in phase 2. Can we count this greenery area as a habitat area when we just do LEED for phase 1? Thanks for your insights.

The credit requirements do not specify a length of time for which the greenfield area must be protected; however, it should be preserved and protected for long-term conservation if possible. Per this credit's "Further Explanation" section in the LEED Reference Guide, establishing a 5- to 7-year management plan is considerd best practice for habitat protection. While no specific length of time is in the credit requirements, consider whether counting the area reserved for Phase 2 of your project as "preserved" really meets the credit intent.
