A recessed LED troffer type fixture may have an indirect light component by way of internal reflectors that reflect upward-directed light within the fixture back down onto the space below. Would internal indirect lighting components within the fixture qualify the fixture as a non-direct-only type? As designers, how do we ensure that a supplier’s products (the fixtures) meet the requirements of the credit? Does the supplier need to have an approval from the GBCI for their products in order for them to be used under this credit, option, and strategy?

Hi Geoffrey, yes, I think that these fixtures would be classified as a non-direct-only type. Regarding ensuring that the supplier's products meet the requirements of the credit: there is not a formal definition and approach outlined by the GBCI. Usually the supplier can tell you this information or the manufacturer. Again the GBCI has not provided a formal definition of what is needed here so it's the best judgement and documentation from the designer or manufacturer that would suffice. The supplier does not need to have an approval from the GBCI for their products in order for them to be used for this credit.
