Energy Star changes

Hi All,

Someone just told me that 80% of his previously certified Energy Star Projects no longer earn certification with the update baselines.  Have any of you started digging into this yet?

To clarify, he actually said that 60% of the 80 buildings In his Energy Star Portfolio no longer qualify for Energy Star Certification.  The good news is that the baseline is getting better and hopefully folks with be incentivized to do more.  At the same time 60% no longer qualifying seems really drastic.

Did they come in just under the threshold now (and could possibly be brought up to the line with some tweaking of building operations) or is there a major gap between those buildings’ current Energy Star scores and the threshold for certification? Most of the changes, they say impact office buildings and K-12 buildings. We noticed a drop of 6 in the Energy Star score for two office buildings we are working on right now – and one is no longer eligible for Energy Star. F

Taking the long view, this is a good thing (each building is compared with the results for the same building type in the 2012 CBECSurvey rather than the 2003 survey), and it means that the building stock (actual utility use, not projections) is getting better.  But tough if your client were used to always earning it.  If they want to feel better, you can show them how they're doing on the ZeroTool.org (which held the 2003 as a starting point).  If they ever get back on track with updating CBECS every 3 years this will be less of a lurch next time...
