BIO

Z Smith is Principal and Director of Sustainability and Building Performance at EskewDumezRipple, winner of the AIA Firm Award. His built work includes projects recognized for design excellence through AIA Honor Awards, the AIA COTE Top Ten award, the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, and the Urban Land Institute. He came to the practice of architecture after a career in technology, earning his bachelor’s degree in Physics from MIT and a doctorate in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from Princeton, advancing breakthroughs in solar cell and information technology, and then leading the development of the Internet Archive and its Wayback Machine. He is named as inventor on 10 patents and author on over 50 peer-reviewed publications. After building the first web interface to a building energy modeling system at the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, he earned a master’s in Architecture from the University of California Berkeley and entered architectural practice. He has taught in the architecture program at the University of British Columbia at the Tulane School of Architecture. He has served on state, national, and international policy bodies including the Louisiana Energy Code Commission, the Louisiana Climate Initiatives Task Force, the US Green Building Council, the national Advisory Group of the AIA Committee on the Environment, and the International Union of Architects Commission on the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
