Schools-2009 MRc1.2:Building Reuse—Maintain Existing Interior Nonstructural Elements

Double trouble with ceilings

Our school project is retaining nearly all of the original plaster ceilings. We are, however, removing the suspended ceilings that were installed in the 1970's, just below the plaster ceilings. Why they installed the suspended ceilings in the first place is a bit of a mystery. They were never necessary. My question is: Do we need to include the suspended ceilings in our calculations for MR 1.2, even though the original ceilings will remain? Thanks, cmk

Cynthia, this is a it of a gray area. It feels like you are keeping the original ceiling and in the spirit of the credit the drop ceiling could be considered a "finish." It is understood that in keeping a reused element you may need to refinish. However, since you are taking out the project's current ceiling I would note this in the narrative, or contact GBCI for confirmation before proceeding.
