NC-v4 WEp1:Outdoor water use reduction

Do water features need to be included in calculations?

I have a project that will have a water feature which will be a splash pad during most of the year and an ice rink for 6 weeks in the winter.  How do I account for this in the Outdoor Water Use prerequisite and credit?  Does it need to be included?  Thanks!

Cindy, this is an interesting question. The credit language refers to outdoor water use, not just irrigation, so at first glance I think you should include it. However, LEED has traditionally not included "process loads" -- whether energy or water -- in prerequisite requirements especially, but also credit requirements to some extent. I would define both of these uses as process loads of the building, not typical regulated loads. In LEED 2009, I would feel confident leaving these out. However, I haven't seen this explicitly addressed in LEED v4 and given the inclusive credit language I would call it a gray area. Have you checked LEED Interpretations? Best to check with GBCI or your LEED Coach, etc., to get a clear answer. Let us know what you learn.
