Creating Concrete EPDs for Inflation Reduction Act Project

Hi all,

We have a project in New Orleans that needs to meet the GSA Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) requirements and submit EPDs. For our concrete, there is only one manufacturer that meets the requirements and is more than 50 miles away (according to EC3). Does anyone have tips on attempting to talk to local concrete manufacturers about pursuing EPDs or other alternative methods?

Thanks,

Talk to the local suppliers and tell them the requirements you are trying to meet. They can likely create a mix design that complies, using Type 1L cement or other materials. They may not have a compliant EPD in the EC3 database because no one has asked them to create one yet. They may have to purchase type 1L cement if they aren't currently stocking it, but would be willing to do so for a government job. I agree with Kristian. If you have a GC, have them reach out to suppliers to set up a conversation. Most (all?) national ready mix suppliers have EPDs available. Local shops often do as well, but it takes a conversation with the right person to know. We've found Type 1L is standard across Wisconsin, Texas (Austin at least), and other states. Type 1L, fly ash, and slag are cheaper than cement. So even if it takes some effort on the supplier's part, they can come out cost neutral or better. We are getting Type IL in New Orleans but we haven't received an EPD. Reach out if you need more information: kimberly.martin@keller-na.com

PCA (Porland Cement Association) has a webinar on November 19 at 11am CT that you can recommend your GC or supplier attend to get EPD Assistance.  "EPD Techincal Assistance for the Cementitious Materials Industry" Webinar Registration - Zoom. This will provide an overview of the PCA's grant and process to apply for the funds.   Overall PCA provides great resources for suppliers.     Also the Global Cement and Concrete Association has a tools to help suppliers.  https://gccaepd.org/tool
