COVID-19: workforce reduction, compensation cuts, forced PTO...

Team SCL,

This was a tough week. My husband coined a phrase "20% laid off."

Unfortunately, 50% of our business is currently impacted by governmental orders stating that our work is non-essential. This is bitter-sweet. I certainly want people to be safe, but we've had to make some tough decisions and in the geographies that were hit first we've started to see lay-offs. For the rest of us, our compensation has been reduced to 80% for those that still have PTO they are able to use (hence, I've been "20% laid off"), or 60% for those that don't. Anyone on an active job site can still bill their project 100%. This is our world for the next four weeks.

I'd like to know what is going on in other parts of the country. How are your firms dealing with employees during this time with the slow downs, lack of ability to get inspections, material delays and closures?

Tough times, we are noting the bidding and development pipelines getting weird in the uncertainty, and are watching the definitions of "essential services" daily - as they are changing in different parts of the nation. We also have already had to make some hard, and hopefully temporary decisions. We aren't where you guys are yet, but I think it is regional and probably just a matter of time.  This all feels very 2008 to me (other than the working from home part).
