Book Launch: People, Planet, Design

Hi Everyone,

As some of you know, I’ve been working on a new book, People, Planet, Design: A Practical Guide to Realizing Architecture's Potential and I’m happy to announce that it is finally available!

This book grew out of a decade of thinking about how sustainability fits within architectural practice. It explores the reasons why buildings do not currently live up to their potential to address climate and equity, and provides tools and resources to center sustainability in any project or firm. My goal with this book is to make sustainable design desirable and accessible and to empower practitioners to use design to solve big problems.

I’m especially excited to share the book with all of you since so many of the ideas that I write about were deeply informed by conversations and collaboration with members of this group, going back to my first Sustainable Design Leaders Summit in 2017. The experience of a sustainable design leader is unique in our industry and I tried to capture the lessons that we’ve learned together in this role so that others can continue to take on the challenge of shifting practice toward high performance.

Also, the book was a real SDL team effort with beautiful illustrations by Helena Zambrano, a foreword by Z Smith, and a review quote provided by Nadav. Many others helped to review content and talk through ideas, including Mike Manzi, Jacob Dunn,  Betsy del Monte, Tate Walker, and Phaedra Svec.

If you’d like to purchase a copy directly from Island Press, use the code PPD, which is good for a 20% discount. You can also order it from Amazon (starting 11/14).

I hope you will consider sharing the book with your own networks. You can help in a few ways:

  • Forward this message to your own contacts or share the news on your social media networks. Feel free to include the discount code, PPD.
  • If you’d like to review it for a publication, website, blog, etc., you can request a review copy from press@islandpress.org.
  • If you’d like to use it in a class, you can request an exam copy at islandpress.org/request-exam-copy.
  • If you purchase the book on Amazon, please consider writing a review.

And, if you’re in Portland OR, come to the book launch party! November 14th, 4:00 - 6:00 at Bora Architects

Thanks for all the inspiration and I really hope you enjoy the book.

Agree with Anne (as usual). Have been looking forward to this since I saw it posted on LinkedIn a few months ago – congratulations, Corey (and Helena) – quite an accomplishment. Jonathan Weiss, (he/him) M:+1.215.620.7322 | jonathan.weiss@jacobs.com Fro

Yay!  Congrats!  Post some social media graphics and blurbs so we can all promote it for you.

I am traveling on the 14th and sad to miss the launch party in Portland, but let's get together and I can share some book launch marketing tips (if you're interested).

Ordering lots of copies through my local independent book store to drive those early sales up. It's the perfect holiday gift for the difficult-to-please architect, engineer, or building owner in your life.

Great idea, Z! I ordered one, and plan to order a Kindle version which will go in a prominent space on my e-book shelf next to Lance’s book. But I like the idea of multiples for gifts too.
