I can't comment based on experience, but I have to say that it seems like a reasonable requirement on the part of ASHRAE. Recirculating hoods don't do as good a job as exhaust hoods. You want that exhaust hood to get particulates and water vapor out of the building, out of harm's way.

I agree with Tristan's comment. Recirculating hoods don't do as good a job as direct exhaust hoods. I don't know of a good way to get beyond this for a high-rise project. The restrictions are less for low-rise residential projects.

Mr. Chang stated that the restriction for ducted range hoods are less in a low rise. First what constitutes a low rise? We build 4-5 story wood frame multifamily and am told that any projects newly registered for LEED will need to comply with an interpretation USGBC made requiring ducted range hoods. Second if we fall into the low rise category how are the restrictions lowered. Thank you in advance for your replies.
