Can a project pursue the prescriptive compliance path if there is not a ASHRAE 50% Advanced Energy Design Guide that is specifically applicable to the base building (i.e. it is greater than 100,000 SF, is not retail, is not a hospital and is not a school).

Amy, no—unfortunately those paths are limited to the specific building types that apply.

My project has the same issue, i.e., the base building is a large office building.
However, the base building has received LEED precertification Gold, and it has also been awarded Green Mark Platinum (the highest in the local green building rating standard), can the project be exempted form filling ASHRAE 50% AEDG? Thanks.

I don't think that gives you any exemption to the requirements. You may not be eligible for the base building points but could look at the remaining points not based on the AEDG.

So just checking if it is a small medical / dental office building not covered by the 50% AEDG, it cannot follow the 30% AEDG for Small Hospitals and Healthcare Facilities to demonstrate compliance with the envelope and HVAC requirements; and is not eligible for the base building points? Thanks.

As I recall in the beginning of each AEDG it describes the project types it applies to.

Our project has a similar issue. The office space that is targeting LEED v4 CI certification is 5.000 square meter (~54.000 square foot) and the base building is a large office building with over 50.000 square meter (~540.000 square feet). It is a small budget and straight forward project. Can it follow Option 2 - Prescriptive Path, namely AEDG 50% guideline?

Technically the AEDG does not apply to larger office buildings. The envelop provisions apply primarily to the base building so I would guess that means that larger building would not be eligible. It does not appear that this issue is addressed in the Reference Guide. Might be worth a LEED Interpretation. Anyone have direct experience with this issue?

I can confirm that you are eligible for up to 10 points if the base building does not meet any of the AEDG requirements when using the prescriptive path. There are 16 points possible but you are not eligible for the 4 points for building envelope and 2 of the points for HVAC which require AEG.....The rest you just need to meet the requirement
