NC-2009 MPR2:Must be a complete, permanent building or space

Addition added after documentation has been submitted

I think I know this answer to this, but I can't find an answer anywhere so I would like someone else's opinion. I'm working on a LEED for schools project. About 3/4 of the building was renovated. We completed LEED documentation for the whole building, have gone through the final design review, and are currently filing appeals. I just found out from a site visit that an 8 classroom addition was added to the building recently. I would imagine that the documentation would need to include the whole building, but I'm not 100% sure. If we do need to document the whole building, what steps would need to be taken? Thanks in advance! Angela

Angela, LEED-NC is a whole building system so yes, it should include the whole building. However, this policy, while fairly black and white when originally introduced, has gotten more nuanced and flexible over the years. If the addition is in a separate wing, for example, and done under a separate contract and process, etc., then you could have reason to exclude it from your LEED project boundary. Please share more specifics.

Thanks for your quick response, Tristan. From what I understand, the addition is a 2 story 8 classroom wing connected to the one story main building. My firm completed the MEP design for the main renovation, and the same architect but different MEP firm completed the wing addition, so yes, a separate contract and process. The MEP systems in the new wing do tie into the main building system.. My main concern is that we've already gone through the final design review. I believe the architect was just planning on submitting the LEED documentation without the new wing, but I would think that we would need to prove that it could be excluded from the project boundary.
