Can I exempt a public space from the controls requirement? The owner doesn’t want visitors adjusting the thermostat all the time.

If the project is using LEED for Retail, then the retail spaces themselves may be exempted. Otherwise, you still need to include some level of control to meet the credit intent. Consider setting a deadband limit on the thermostat to prevent rapid changes, or use a creative method such as a sign requesting visitors provide feedback to a designated individual.

Can this credit be achieved if the project has no existing parking and is providing no new parking?

Projects with no associated off -street parking automatically achieve credit compliance; no calculations or preferred parking spaces are required.

If there truly is no existing or new parking dedicated to this building, this would represent a 100% reduction, which exceeds the Exemplary Performance requirements for this credit.

If the top floor of a parking garage includes parking spaces, is it considered a roof or non-roof surface?

If the top level of your parking structure has parking spaces, it is considered a nonroof surface, and needs to be included in the calculations for Option 1 under “Area of nonroof measures.” If your project is pursuing Option 2, any roof used to shade or cover parking must meet the criteria listed in the credit requirements.

If the manufacturer cannot provide the SR or SRI values, can standard values be used based on the color of the material?

Teams must provide manufacturer documentation or independent testing demonstrating SRI value for roofing material and SR value for nonroof material.

Typical SR values for gray cement concrete, white cement concrete and asphalt concrete can be used for standard nonroof materials per LEED Interpretation #10411.

The Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC) has a searchable product database, but some materials may need to be independently tested.
