NC-v4 EAp2:Minimum energy performance

Baseline HVAC Modelling - System 8, Electric Resistance Heating, and Heat Recovery (ASHRAE 90.1‑2010 Appendix G)

Hi All,

We are modelling a commercial tower under ASHRAE 90.1‑2010 Appendix G. The proposed design includes:

  • Cooling via central chiller (summer months)
  • Heating via heat pumps (for 2 winter months)
  • HVAC system per floor, with some spaces having heat recovery and DOAS, while others not.

System 8 (VAV w/parallel fan-powered boxes) turns out to be the baseline HVAC system

Queries:

  1. For heating in the baseline, is it sufficient to model electric resistance coils at the zone level (parallel fan powered boxes), or must we include a heat pump or central heating coil in the baseline system as well?
  2. Regarding heat recovery: since the proposed design includes heat recovery in some spaces only, and in baseline each floor is served by a single HVAC system, how should this be reflected in the baseline? Should the baseline system include heat recovery in HVAC system for the entire floor?

Appreciate your views and response.

  1. Yes electric resistance at the zone level. There is no central heating or heat pump in this system.
  2. The baseline system requirements for heat recovery are based on the requirements in Section 6.5.6.1. So it depends on the baseline system air flow rates.
