NC-v4 LTc6:Bicycle facilities

Bicycle storage installation

The project involves establishing bicycle parking facilities within our campus. This storage system ensures safety by providing parking tokens and installing a surrounding fence. We submitted this scenario to LEED Online, but it has received review comments as follows: 'It does not appear that the long-term bicycle storage provided for the regular building occupants is covered. Ensure that the long-term bicycle storage is covered.'

Here, I have a doubt regarding the credit requirement. Is it necessary to provide bicycle storage that is under cover? Referring to the LEED BD+C reference guide, page number 106 states: 'Both short-term and long-term storage facilities are more likely to be used if they are located in a well-lit, safe, and accessible area.' What is the meaning of 'well-lit' in this context?

Additionally, I'm unsure if it's necessary for bicycle storage to be completely covered. Can we consider bicycle storage if it is covered by a shadow of the building?

Thank you

Yes, it is required that the bike parking be covered. The intent is to shelter the bikes from rain/snow, so it could be inside a building, under a canopy, inside a garage, etc., whatever fits the project best. Well-lit would mean including lighting at nighttime so the space feels safe and it's easy to retrieve the bike.    From your suggestion that the bike storage be covered by a shadow, I wonder if your project is located somewhere with infrequent rain/snow? I know some projects in desert climates have pursued this credit by showing that the bike parking is protected from sun and wind, with shading that's consistent throughout the daytime.

Hi Subhashkumar,

  1. Yes, it should be covered for long-term bicycle storage. As define in LEED BD+C v4 guide page 110, long-term bicycle storage is bicycle parking that easily accessible to residents and employees and covered to protect bicycles from rain and snow.
  2. No further explanation what well-lit means for (whether in guide or addenda). So, it seems like well-lit can be interpreted as general definition which the bicycle storage should have sufficient lighting during the day and at night for security and safety purposes.
  3. As stated in the definition for long-term bicycle (refer to no.1), the function of a cover on a long-term bicycle is to protect from rain and snow, so being covered by the shadow of a building may not serve that purpose.
