Pilot-Credits EQpc123:Designing with Nature, Biophilic Design for the Indoor Environment

Phytoclimatic Glass

We have a project that has electric photochromic Glass. The tint of the glass will change based on the sun's intensity hitting the windows. Would we be able to use that to apply for this credit?

Hi, Brian! I don't know how GBCI would view this, but given the complaints I have heard about smart glass and its tinting, I would be skeptical of biophilic benefits. Our Products & Materials Specialist did a great article about smart glass last year. A quote: "If one gazes out on a sunflower that is no longer yellow, our perception of that flower is different. And on interior objects, as the glazing tints, it can alter the perception of colors on those as well. The blue created by older products (and still there to some extent) can make reds appear purple, for instance, and the colors change as the glazing tints throughout changing daylighting conditions."  This is not necessarily insurmountable, but it's definitely an issue with smart glass. (The article is premium content, so write to me directly at paula at buildinggreen dot com if you aren't a BG subscriber and would like to read the whole thing.)
