Employee EV Incentive Program Ideas

Hi SCL,

It's my first time posting in the SCL group, as a somewhat new member. I'm grateful for any input you can provide to me!

My company, Nibbi Brothers, is currently brainstorming how to roll out an EV incentive program to employees. We recently polled our staff to get a general idea of where they stood with EV in terms of their level of knowledge, their openness to switching to EV if they weren't currently an owner, and what would help them make the switch. One of the top issues that came up was the ability to charge at work -- we share a parking lot with other office tenants in our building, so it would be tricky to install chargers since we do not own the lots. Another issue is charging at home -- has anyone rolled out a program where they helped install home chargers for employees?

In addition to the EV poll, we also reviewed inventory of employees with the most gas card usage, driving their own vehicles. We figured that would be a good starting point of who to start talking to first about switching to company EVs.

I would love to hear of any company EV incentive programs, how you rolled it out, and how you structured it within your company benefits. We are hoping to create a program that can work in with the anticipated California EV tax credits.

Hi Anita, Few quick things on this topic- and following for other suggestions! * We are moving forward with a WEX fuel card that also can be used to pay for EV charging. * I did a little digging into our vehicle allowance policy to update the allowance to pay for at home charging/equipment- still a work in progress- but that is where I would start. I connected with the company below that looks at equitable reimbursement solutions- they can create a policy to encourage a EV transition. * We decided to invest our time at the moment to support craft/non craft in vanpooling options through our local commute trip reduction programs. Hi Anita,
  • At Columbia we worked it out with our landlord to install 6 EV charging stations (level 2) at our office. Columbia employees can charge for free.
  • We offer to install level 2 jobsite charging by request. We've done custom installations a few times, but I don't see that as scaleable so we're also in discussions with the companies that provide our jobsite trailers and working with them to include at least one 240v 30amp+ exterior receptable suitable for receiving an EV charger that we may provide or rent from them.
  • We also have company-owned shared EVs that employees can reserve and use during the day so they become familiar with the technology. EV charging stations are part of nearly every project we do now (that has parking) and we see it as our obligation to have our staff become experts with this technology. It is part of most new projects afterall!
  • I'm currently working on an incentive for accelerating the transition to EVs for employees. It's not fully cooked yet, but will likely include direct pay incentive to employees that terminate their company gas card account ($$$/month) and one-time incentive for employees that do not have company gas cards.
  • We explored the option of assisting with employee home charging, but (so far) have decided to just provide the cash incentive and let the employee determine how to use that money.

I'm super glad that you're considering something similar and for anyone reading this, please contact your jobsite trailer companies and request that exterior outlets suitable for EV charging are made part of their standard offerings! Good luck!
