NC-v4.1 EAp2:Minimum Energy Performance

District Cooling Systems

We are using the path for the EA Prerequisite 2 (Minimum Energy Performance),Performance Option 1-Streamlined Path) by modeling purchased cooling from an existing District Cooling Plant. Is there a chance we can pass this Prerequisite if the DCS chiller performances are below the baseline efficiencies?

Absolutely, as achieving the prerequisite depends on many additional factors besides cooling plant performance (envelope improvements, lighting power reductions, service water heating equipment and potential demand reductions, air-side HVAC measures, etc.). However, if the district cooling plant is less efficient than the Baseline I would consider using ASHRAE 90.1-2016 instead of the streamlined path, since the cooling plant would be modeled as neutral purchased chilled water equally in the Baseline and Proposed models.
