Innovative, Deep Green Building Retrofits

Hi Everyone,

Our Vancouver team is looking for some innovative, high performance  building retrofit case studies. We are have been retained to retrofit a significant heritage building in Vancouver and the client has a net zero carbon institutional goal. As such we are looking for some innovative precedents that will provide design and performance inspiration.

I recall a posting recently about a study being completed for the AIA on building retrofits. Does anyone know if this is complete?

If you have any great case studies, please let me know.

Best,

Kathy

Hey Kathy, it's still in process. Z Smith knows more as he's working through it's completion, but I do know the group of us that's reviewing it hasn't seen the draft yet, so it's still a little ways out from publications.

Hey Kathy & Allison,
We put the call out for candidates a few months ago and are still making final selections, so Allison is right, we're a ways out from publication. We will update when it's ready to go!

Hello Kelsey, Just yesterday the Seattle COTE was discussing the possibility of taking on the effort of assembling case studies and best practices on the subject of building retrofits to assist clients in complying with the Clean Buildings Act here in Washington state.  I'd love to see what your team has done when it is ready for publication.

Kathy & Kelsey, This design for an EnerPHit retrofit of a NYU residential hall in a historic district may be of interest to both of you. It is slated to be the largest EnerPHit project when complete. It’s relatively new so we do not have much public documentation on it, but here is a public presentation we did for the NYC historic preservation dept: https://www1.nyc.gov/assets/lpc/downloads/pdf/presentation-materials/20220405/35-Fifth-Avenue.pdf I can provide more info if helpful. Best, - Dan On

Dan, That's a lot of thoughtful work on the window replacement component of this project under the EnerPHit (PassiveHouse) program. For the call that we posted a few months ago for case studies on the guide we're developing for the  AIA on 'Building Reuse for Climate Action', we are looking for some whole-building information---size, type, before & after EUI, move towards electrification, etc.   Do you have that sort of information for the 35 Fifth Avenue project?

Hi Kathy, Have you looked through the COTE Top Ten award winners? Each year, there are a handful of existing/historic buildings, and the case studies are published on the AIA website with a fair amount of detail. If you look back to 2021 recipients, Market One balanced historic tax credits (and associated review by heritage officers) with net zero goals. 2019 included the St. Patrick's cathedral, likely the most historically significant building to recieve this award. COTE® Top Ten Awards - AIA I would also check out the ZNCC website for life cycle carbon studies of existing and historic buildings. ZNCC is also in the process of developing a few total carbon case studies, which will hopefully be published later this year, that illustrate the operational carbon savings of energy upgrades in combination with the avoided embodied emissions of reuse. There are also several summary case studies in the Climate Heritage Network library: Building Reuse is Climate Action! – Climate Heritage Mobilization

Thanks everyone for your feedback on building retrofit case studies. Appreciate everyone's response and recommended resources.  Looking forward to reviewing the AIA Building Reuse for Climate Action Guide when it is complete.  Thanks, Kathy
