Has anyone attempted this Pilot Credit yet?  Our project is a college science building which was under construction during the COVID-19 shutdown, and already incoporates most of the requirements.  I'm wondering if any projects have gotten feedback on this one yet?

We are attempting this Pilot Credit as well. Although our project is NC v4, the outdoor air / ventilation exceeds the ASHRAE 62.1-2016 requirements. My plan for documentation is to include the excel file with ventilation design data, and then just update the O&M, and commissioning plan to include testing to confirm we meet the requirements. Seems like pretty straigh-forward documentation requirements. Please let me know if you received additional feedback from your reviewers that may be helpful. thanks

Is achievement of this credit as simple as showing achievement of ASHRAE 62.1-2016 (via the IEQ prerequisite spreadsheet) and providing MERV 13 or higher cutsheets?  What other documentation is required?

Documents include:
  • Description of ventilation strategies implemented by the project
  • Calculations for air changes per hour for occupied spaces.
  • Copy of facilities requirements and operations and maintenance plan and updated commissioning plan communicating the purpose and intended performance of IAQ related building systems.

For the MERV 13 requirements, would HVAC systems serving regularly occupied spaces be excluded from this requirement?  We also have VRF systems serving the parking garage elevator lobbies that do not have MERV 13 filtration - will we need to include MERV 13 on those as well to comply?

We are attempting INpc155 for a LEED v4 ID+C: Commercial Interiors project of ours and plan to follow the requirements as described by Louise Schlatter above.

Hi everyone! I'm in the same situation as most of you who have already commented. I'm pursuing this pilot credit for a LEED v4 NC office building. My intention is to submit the same documents as previously specified @Louise Schlatter, as the the outdoor air / ventilation of the project exceeds the ASHRAE 62.1-2016 requirements. The supporting documention is the following:
  • The excel file with ventilation design data
  • Schedule and cutsheet of the HVAC equipment specifying the filters (MERV 13 or above)
  • Operation and maintenance plan, and commissioning plan
Nevertheless I have the following questions:
  1. I'm pursuing this pilot credit in the Design Certification (Split Review), so I still have no O&M and commissioning plan. How should I proceed?
  2. If the project already complies with the aire filtration, is it necessary to submit the calculations for air changes per hour for occupied spaces?
Any recommendations will be welcome! Thank you for your help!

We are submitting this pilot credit shortly, but I am not clear if we are required to confirm the air changes per hour for non-occupied spaces that have recirculated air systems.  These systems only use MERV8 filters, so we have designed these spaces to achieve at least five clean air changes per hour via the supply air.  We believe this covers all bases to provide clean air, even though these spaces are not occupied.

@Irene Garcia Saez - I had one split-review project where we received a comment during design review about not having addressed the intent of this credit in the commissioning plan. Like you, we didn't have a commissioning plan yet and had to defer to the construction phase review when the commissioning plan would be available. It would be ideal if this credit could be fully documented/approved during the design review as credits that overlap design and construction reviews are tricky as far as involvement of design team during construction.

@Dave Hubka, or anyone who has achieved this credit on a CS building: How did you address the requirement to provide ventilation per ASHRAE 62.1 when the building is occupied, one example would be cleaning people at the tenants' space when the HVAC is turned off after hours. Thank you.

The Equipment Runtime Schedule was uploaded to LEED Online. The schedule included the following note: "When the building is occupied (any occupants including cleaning and facility personnel), the ventilation systems will provide required minimum amounts of outdoor air for ventilation per ASHRAE Standard 62.1-2016 or later." We included training on this requirement to the building operator within the Enhanced Commissioing requirement: "Verify operator and occupant training delivery and effectiveness." This method of implementation was approved by GBCI.  Good Luck!

Dear Dave, could you confirm if for the calculations of air changes per hour you only need to calculate de volume of the espace, multiply it at 5 times and review if the design outdoor air rate is above that amount? E.G: If I have a 3m cube space I will need to provide 90m3/h or more air rate? Thank you for your guide. Lenka RR.

calculation procedure is identical to the procedure outlined by the Minimum Indoor Air Quality Performance prerequisite, only difference is that 62.1-2016 is the baseline for this Pilot Credit.

We've achieved this credit on projects with fairly limited documentation. Our prereq uses the 2016 standard and everything is HEPA filters.
