In our early childhood education center, the large outdoor play space is supplemented with a separate support building that provides additional opportunity for children to experience the connection with natural systems in a weather-protected space. Classes can learn about gardening fundamentals and then bring plants indoors to further investigate (i.e. how leaves change with the seasons, local bugs and insects, washing fruits/vegetables). Direct connection with the environment is the best way to invoke the benefits of biophilia, therefore creating a support space extends the outdoor accessibility by providing occupants refuge and relief from varying weather and seasons.
