Firm Anniversary Examples

Hi all,

GBD turns 50 this year! I would like to share some examples with leadership of how we can make it more than just an event for clients... something that can give back, engage the public, focus on sustainability, etc. I remember that a Seattle firm had an awesome event that engaged a public plaza, etc. I had read something about it on their blog a while back and now can't think of it... any ideas on who that was, or other ideas?

Thanks!

Hannah

That was GGLO.... I wasn't there but it sounded awesome and is still spoken about! I'd be partial to a slow-food dinner with co-making using local food, and a contemplative discussion of what it means to be a sustainable designer... what sustains you as architects and gives you the full intelligence of your body and soul and full collaboration of the team to do the best possible work as a firm for the next 50 years?

Yes, it was GGLO in celebration of our 30th anniversary.  The event was called Step It Up.  It involved a series of public art installations that were designed to promote interaction & build "communities" on the large public hill climb outside our office.  There was also an open party on the steps that started off with a performance art spectacle followed by musicians and food from nearby restaurants.  Here are some links with more info... https://www.gglo.com/news/step-it-up/   https://www.designinpublic.org/event/step-it-up-exhibition/  AIA Seattle even recognized some of the art installations our staff created in 2016's design awards  https://www.gglo.com/news/aia-asla-recognize-gglo-community-design/ David Winans / GGLO

Moody Nolan celebrated our 35th anniversary in 2018.  As part of that, we wanted to give back to the communities we serve thus the idea of the legacy house.  The first house started with a very aggressive sustainable vision but the reality of the process became a real challenge.  A lot of lessons learned.  Plan is to do more on future houses.    Article     Video

Hannah, When we celebrated our 30th anniversary, we donated and planted 30 shade native trees in an under-served neighborhood that is adjacent to our office. Helena Zambrano, AIA

Another idea: When Beck celebrated 100 years (!!) for 100 days, 100 "good things" were planned. It was 100 gestures, large and small, to community groups or NGOs that worked on causes Beck supported. Employees were asked in advance to submit ideas, so everyone could get involved. It also stretched out the celebration! Betsy
