Certifying a new airport terminal using LEED - exclude the runways?

Dear All,

One of our clients is considering the possibility of certifying a new airport terminal using LEED and asked us to perform a preliminary evaluation of the potential LEED score.

In order to evaluate compliance potential with some of the credits (e.g., Restore and Protect Open Space, Open Space Activation, etc.) we need to know if we can exclude the runways from LEED Certification border. Runways represent an huge area and if we need to include them we will lose several points, mainly related with Sustainable Sites, decreasing the certification potential.

Can you please help us with this question ?

Thanks in advance,

Hi Ricardo, did you try asking GBCI?

Hi Trista, Yes, I already asked GBCI and the answer was: Yes, I should include the runways.

Just out of curiosity, were the runways existing and your project is only a new terminal, or are the runways new and part of your project?

Dear Emily, Following the answer received from GBCI: In fact, yes, runways are usually required to be included in a LEED airport project's LPB, particularly in the case of the certification of a new airport or airport terminal where the overall scope of work includes the construction of the supporting runways.  The most common exceptions to this rule would be in cases of partial renovation projects that do not involve construction or modification of runway areas, and new construction that involves parts of an airport complex that are not directly related to the runways (e.g. support structures that are not part of the main airport building, per se).  In fact, yes, runways are usually required to be included in a LEED airport project's LPB, particularly in the case of the certification of a new airport or airport terminal where the overall scope of work includes the construction of the supporting runways. The most common exceptions to this rule would be in cases of partial renovation projects that do not involve construction or modification of runway areas, and new construction that involves parts of an airport complex that are not directly related to the runways (e.g. support structures that are not part of the main airport building, per se).

Dear Ricardo and Emily, This post is really helpful. I have the same case. A new Airport and we want to certify only the Terminal building. I have difficulties to define the Leed Boundary. According to the “Consideration for LEEC v4 BD+C Airports Project”, runways must be included in the LEED Campus. But Leed Campus is different from certifying only the Terminal building. I have also asked GBCI ….

...and I am waiting for their answer. So Ricardo your case is the same? You want to certify only the Terminal?

Hi Konstantina, Yes, We are certifying only Terminal but according to GBCI we need to include the runways (because it is a new Terminal, not a expansion or a refurbishment)...

Hello Ricardo, is it possible to send me your email? As I read the posts our projects are alike, so I think it would be helpful to have direct contact. If you want keep in touch via my email kwnstantina122@gmail.com. Thanks
