NC-2009 MRc4:Recycled Content

New Wood vs Recycled Wood

Hi. Trying to understand this: Our company uses MDF in our products which claims 97% recycled content (all pre-consumer). I assume the remaining 3% is considered new wood and certified under their coc #. The MDF is 57.54% [by weight] of our product. Am I correct that the certified "new wood" is 1.72% of the product (3% X 57.54%)? Thanks

Hi Bobby, your logic in getting to 1.72% is right but I'm not sure that 3% is new wood - with MDF it might be 97% recycled wood, 3% new resin/binder material. I'd check with the manufacturer on the new wood content, if they have a LEED or FSC contact person that would be a good source.

I would add - if the expectation is that the project will get some FSC certified wood 'credit' for using this particular product, and you are using material that has FSC certification - your company is required to have your own COC# if you are doing anything else but install the MDF onto a project site (with minor manipulation allowed for installation purposes).  If not, then you are breaking the chain of custody and any new wood would have to be documented as non-FSC wood.
