NC-v4 SSc5:Heat island reduction

Portion of gound level paving under building

Hi,

I have a building for which the ground level steps back and therefore the paving is shading by the building itself. I can't quite tell how to account for this, is it either:

a. Exclude the area under the building from the Heat Island Reduction Calculation (Non-Roof)

b. The roof for the portion of the building over the paving has to meet the "architectural shading / structure" non-roof measure SR value AND the roof itself is additionally considered for roof measures against roof SRI values?

I know for v2009 you can exclude paving area underneath the area but I'm not sure for v4 if this is still the case, I'm hoping someone can help clarify for me.

Thanks!

Tilly

Hi Tilly,  There is a sentence in the v4 Reference Guide (pg 200 in the PDF copy I have) that states "Calculate the area of each nonroof measure in plan view." I believe this should answer your question. Since the area you're describing would not be visible in plan view, I would not count it in the nonroof area or the roof area. So, option a of your approaches.
If you want to be certain, you can email GBCI directly and ask for clarification. I have had to do this a few times for other credits just to be sure.

any final word on whether to include this area or not in non-roof calculations?

In following up with Emily's response and conclusively addressing this question/ concern... with reference still on page 200 Step 4 of the Step by Step Guidance segment. The bullet point 2 also states for clarity:
  • Count each hardscape surface only once, even if it is addressed through multiple strategies (e.g. permeable paving also shaded.)
