NC-v4 EAp2:Minimum energy performance

Historic Building Energy Performance with Regard to Insulation

Hello,

Do historic buildings that fully comply with ASHRAE 90.1-2010 under the minimum energy performance prerequisite still comply without insulating to the level required by 5.4 for new construction, as the standard states under 4.2.1.3 Exception a. that historic buildings need not comply with the provisions of sections 4,6,7,8,9 and 10?  Do we comply by virtue of 4.2.1.3 rather than by fulfilling other requirements in the standard?

Yes. Insulation levels are not a mandatory provision of 90.1 under Section 5.4 for any building. LEED projects must comply with the mandatory provisions and demonstrate a certain minimum energy savings relative to Appendix G, historic buildings are not exempted. A historic building without added insulation is treated like any other existing building in LEED.
