EV Charging Stations

Hello - My client is preparing to purchase Tesla EV charging stations to meet LEED v4 requirements. These stations will work only with Teslas. I see nothing in the guidance to suggest that a proprietary unit will disqualify us from the LEED credit. Can you please clarify that the Tesla stations will qualify for LEED v4? Thank you.

Dianne, I agree with you, there is nothing to disqualify it.I am going to reach out to USGBC to check on it, though.

The intent of the credit is to encourage the use of green vehicles by providing refueling (charging) infrastructure for multiple vehicle types. So providing Tesla-only charging infrastructure would not fully align with the intent of the credit. That said, in my conversations with Tesla reps, there is an adaptor available for Tesla chargers t connect with the more universal chargers for other vehicles. So, if Teslas are the only vehicles using chargers at this point and the adaptor is available if other vehicle types eventually need the charging infrastructure, then this would align with the credit intent.

Hi Tristan,  Can you pass along any information you have about whether a proprietary unit installed on a project such as Tesla would be able to contribute towards the Reduced Parking Footprint credit? I am currenlty working on a LEEDv4 project that is installing 3 Tesla chargers. Thanks!
