NC-2009 EAp2:Minimum Energy Performance

ASHRAE 90.1-2007, 6.5.3.1.1,exception b

Greetings, According to ASHRAE 90.1-2007, 6.5.3.1.1,exception b, individual exhaust fans with motor nameplate kW of 0.75 kW or less could be excluded when estimating Fan system power limitation. There are projects however, where there are such small fans, but they are part of some systems - say small 100% OA supply AHUs with only a supply fan and the small fans are the exhaust part of these systems. The question is: Should the power of these small fans (exception b) in the above cases be excluded (taken off) from the fan power calculation performed by the simulation software, or with other words, shall we enter these small fans in the energy model? Thanks.

The Proposed is always modeled as designed. The baseline fans are modeled according to G3.1.2.9. If a fan is part of the HVAC system then it is covered. If a fan is not part of the HVAC system then it is not regulated and considered a process load. The size of the fan does not matter. That exception would apply for code compliance - those small fans do not have to comply with this prescriptive requirement.
