On May 7, 2014, Christine asked a question about how to meet Option 1 requirements related to reporting of "raw material supplier extraction locations" but it doesn't seem to me that it was ever answered. Has USGBC clarified what constitutes a "location?" Presumably a country is too broad. What about the next level of jurisdiction down from that, or the next (e.g. states & counties in the U.S.). Obviously, the type of jurisdiction will vary totally from one country to the next. Or are we talking GPS coordinates? A circled area on a map? Help!

Jason, I don't think there are any compliant CSRs yet, and this may be part of the reason why. To my knowledge, guidance on this is still in the works.

Thanks, Paula. But only a part of the credit language references CSRs (the second bullet under Requirements in the Reference Guide). Elsewhere there is reference only to a generic "report" and according to the first bullet this can be a self-declared report from the manufacturer (worth 1/2 a product). At the end of the first paragraph, it says that the report has to include "a commitment to meeting applicable standards or programs voluntarily that address responsible sourcing criteria," but it doesn't say that such standards or programs have to be CSRs per se. For example, it seems like a manufacturer could satisfy this and the other requirements in the first paragraph by stating a commitment to FSC -- without actually being FSC certified or making an FSC product. Am I missing something?

I think we are all missing the same thing, which is actual guidance from USGBC. :-)

So it's not even the blind leading the blind. It's more like a bunch of blind people milling around running into things.

Hi all, Just working with a construction materials (insulation) client on ensuring their CSR report meet LEEDv4 BDC requirements. We have the same question but wish to expand it. We have had no response from USGBC LEED teams despite their promises to get back to us.
- Raw material supplier extraction locations
What is expected of a manufacturer on this? Postcode? Map? Supplier office address? Grid ref? GPS coords? How do USGBC see companies meeting this requirement while also respecting commercial confidentiality?
- Commitment to long-term ecologically responsible land use
What is expected? Policy stating such commitment? What is a valid commitment (SMART)? By whose yardstick? What does long term imply? Does the definition include site Closure? Does delivery of commitment need to be described in report by using Standards (eg Rio Tinto's Closure Standard)? Can there be such a thing as ecologically-responsible land disturbance?
- Commitment to reducing environmental harms from extraction and/or manufacturing processes
What does such a commitment look like (SMART)? Examples? Is precautionary principle required to be stated? Does a general Env Policy commitment suffice?
- Commitment to meeting applicable standards or programs voluntarily that address responsible sourcing criteria
Standard could mean ISO20400 Sust Procurement. Program could mean supplier baseline audit? or voluntary initiative such as CIRIA responsible sourcing project (UK)?
We are very familiar with GRI G4 and the new SRS, but we need to know what LEED/USGBC think they mean, and what they expect to see in a CSR report, in order to correctly advise our client.
Thanks so much!

Alex, USGBC is actively working on changes to this credit, so the fact that they haven't been back to you does not surprise me, unfortunately. I have heard them say it is a priority for the TAG. I don't know how long it will be till you have answers.
