Sea water exchanger heat pump, considere as renewable energy ?

Hello We work on an office building connected to DES heating and colling (district level) and pursue Leed C&S v2009 certification. The DES generation is reversible heat pumps with sea water exchangers. With the option 2 (aggregate scenario) for the DES, could we considere the sea water based production as renewable energy elligible for credit EAc2? Thanks for your reply

I don't think so. This is similar to ground source heat pumps which do not qualify as renewable.

Our campus operates a similar system using deep cool lake waters in a non-contact heat exchange loop to create district chilled water. We recently submitted a CIR to check compatibility with the EA-2 requirements and were denied. The response can be found at LEED Interpretation 10429. I'll maintain that we disagree with the ruling rationale, but it is what it is.
